Subject: btlist: BT on TV

Well, I really would like to be spending this weekend in Chicago at the
play with some other list members, but at least I've had the
satisfaction tonight of sitting in front of my own TV and watching BT -
and it _wasn't_ my videotape! It was right there, via Primestar
satellite on Sundance Channel. It's one of seven scheduled showings
this month on Sundance and I plan to tape most of them, both for backups
for me and to be able to lend without worrying that I might lose my only
copy. Oh, and I do plan to _give_ one to a, um, "special" friend. ;)

Gary,

Is it widescreen or the same pan and scan that was released on video here??

Unfortunately, it's the US NTSC version with "pan and scan," but it
actually is a bit better quality than a couple of places in my video
where there was some noise. But then, I've got Primestar which
transmits digitally (to my analog TV, but nonetheless the sound and
video quality are both much better than cable transmission.)

Hello BT fans, and fiction readers,

Here is this weeks archive update information.

New Look
--------
This week we gave the archive a make-over. Gone is the green (as nice as it
was!) and in with the 'virginal' white. You'll also notice a new banner
that incorporates a new logo.

New Stories
-----------
It's been a big week for stories sent in to the mailing list. Most of them
have made it to this weeks web site update. Jean has sent in more of the
"Gravesend" story...an alternative part 9 starts you off and goes all the
way through to part 14. Sandra sent in "Love at First Sight". It's in
Spanish but for the rest of us Jean has kindly done an English translation.
New writer-holic Joshua has been on the stories list only a week and has
several parts ready of his story(s). Joshy's stories are hosted at his own
web site but we've added links for you to find them. Kent concludes his
"Wet" story this week with part 7. And finally, Graham's part 5 and 6 of
"The Club" are now online.

Awards
------
Yesterday the archive picked up it's 4th award. This time Ravi's Elite Site

BT was produced for theaters in the basic widescreen format. The
European (at least the British) video release was letterboxed for the
wide screen, but the version released in NTSC (the U.S. color TV format)
was edited for the 3x4 aspect ratio. So far that is the version that
Sundance Channel is showing this
month.

I know that some folks bought a British tape and then got it converted -
at some expense - from the PAL to NTSC format.

Well, what can I say! It was so much fun! Myself, Jay, Jeff, Harrith,
Eric, Jan and TJ were there...Jan and TJ just for Saturday....we all say
the play sat nite and it was marvelous! The play really flows alot
better than the movie. There were a few mishaps, such as the 2 of the
globes covering the outdoor lights falling off and breaking when doors
were slammed. We all wondered if it was on purpose, but the stage
manager said no (they stayed on sunday nite!). I was very impressed
with all the actors for the most part. Being americans, their accents
slipped a few times, but overall not very noticeable. After the sat
nite show, we got to talk to the actors who played Sandra and Jamie (he
looks totally different from the pictures on The Famous Doors
webpage...but more on that in a minute). They both seemed appreciative
of our being there and were willing to talk to us (after Jeff assured
them that we weren't stalkers!). The 5 of us then went again Sunday
nite and it was even better! Unfortunately we did not get to talk to
the actors because they were staying late for a photo shoot. Some of
these pictures should be posted on Famous Door's web page soon!!!! We
did get to talk to Ste's real mum on sunday nite as she actually found
us out! She was very nice to us and also seemed grateful for our
attendance (of course we told her how wonderful her son was!!!).
Anyway, those are a few thoughts...im sure the others will have much
insight to add too! Oh, the play is apparently doing so well that its
run has been extended to Aug 8 (is was scheduled to end June 28) so now
you all have even more opportunities to go see it! It is well worth
it!!!!!!!!!

Subject: btlist: Chicago Production

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Chicago production is a
*revelation*. Went to see it with the nicest group of guys (romantic BTers
every one) ever. If you get a chance, make sure that you get to Chicago to
see it. I have ordered the stage-play from Amazon.com and can't wait until
it gets here.

The play really brings a slightly different edge to the story. Aside from
the fact that these are flesh and blood humans acting this out not 2 feet
from you, the dialogue is also a bit different. There is a hilarious and
touching scene between Jamie and Ste (not in the movie) in which Ste tries
to give Jamie soccer (football) lessons, while Jamie keeps trying to
introduce lines from 'Cagney and Lacy'. Eric reminds me that the movie
contains the woods/'snog the golly off him' scene in its place.

For me the most touching scene in this production takes place during the
peppermint lotion scene. Just as Jamie finishes up his massage (a bit more
erotic in the play), he bends down to gently (reverently, actually) place
his right cheek on the small of Ste's back - very touching and quite
effective in conveying his affection for Ste. Also, in the play (or
perhaps just this production of it) after Jamie plants that first chaste
kiss on Ste, Ste turns on his side to face Jamie to deliver the "I'm a bit
sore" line. A small difference from the movie, but does communicate
perhaps a bit more return of feeling towards Jamie. Overall I felt that
the play does a better job of displaying the growing bond between Jamie and
Ste, and several of the movie's scenes made better sense after seeing the
play.

To Harith, Eric, Jeff, Jay, and Michael I say 'thanks' for the great time.
I'll never forget Michael's b-line for the dance floor at Roscoe's, Eric's
sage advice on BT-lore, Jay's earnest reading of Jonathon's description of
writing BT, Harith's beautiful smile, and Jeff's delicious voice.

Seeing the stage production of "BT" was truly a revelation for me, as well.
And the weekend spent with the gang was wonderful. (Though I fear the list
will tire of us recounting our Chicago experience, I'll just say right now
that I won't be able to get enough of reports on next week's pilgrimage to
Thamesmead, so... here goes...)

The play is a most fulfilling work. So much of Jonathan's play had to be
reworked and dropped for the movie. The movie in its own right is great and
brought us all together, and it introduced the chase/kiss scene and the
Gloucester visit. But the play is so much more rich in detail and humour.
And the Famous Door's casting is imbeccable, and probably even more true to
Jonathan's vision than the casting for the movie. Matt Stinton, who plays
Jamie, and Michael Moran, who plays Ste, are more true to the Jamie and Ste
I would expect. My one concern from the very beginning of BT was that Glenn
played Jamie too rough. And Scott didn't seem to hit Ste with the sporty
masculinity that Michael did. And, yes, Jan, the PFL scene is so well-done.

I know this is bordering on blasphemy, but don't get me wrong. The play and
the movie are two different things. The play, after all, came first. The
movie is just that... it couldn't be as involved as the play.

But enough of BT observations. The weekend truly was made special by the
people. I had had the honour of meeting Eric and Jay (our Chicago host) in
London for our meeting last fall. It was especially great to see them
again. But I got to broaden my BT horizons by meeting Harith and MGB, my
IRC buddies. And equally great to meet were Jan and T.J. of the email list.
Perhaps by the next time we meet, Jan, I will be able to pronounce your
name. (Yon Yudziwhatever, or something like that). And I hate to disappoint
you, but my delicious voice was only because of a sinus condition. It's
usually very high, nelly and whiney sounding. And I'm still sweating from
the Indian food, T.J.

We all should consider one last trip to Chicago. That closing weekend idea
being bantered about sounds great. After all, any time I can get out of
boring, lifeless Omaha, the better!

I echo Andy's appreciation for the reports from Jan, Michael, Eric, and
Jeff. Tired? Of hearing about THE play from eyewitnesses? Not I!
You have each shed light on the play-going experience for those of us
not so lucky as to have been there-- if anyone hears of Jay updating his
Hompage with info, a report or pics!!! of the eventful weekend, please
let us know (I think Jay isn't on this mailing list at present??)

As for Thamesmead Diarists-in-the-making <G>, expect me to gush in
mind-numbing detail after I get back next Wednesday (I'll have the
advantage of seeing what everybody else chips in with first!) I've
never had the pleasure of meeting people in real life after having
communicated with them online, and to be able to FINALLY meet, at one
time, so many people-- and real good friends, too!-- after so long...
well, I expect it will be very emotional, so I'll be bringing an extra
big BT! (that's "Box of Tissues"!!)

I like this idea, because I might be able to make it, if indeed it's the
last weekend of July. I'd have to go to a Thursday or Friday
performance, since I would have to be back sometime Saturday for my
church work on Sunday. But if summer enrollment for the second five-week
term turns out as well as it has for the first five-week term, I'd be
able to swing it financially, taking Amtrak up to Chicago. I'd really
love to have a chance to see the play. I've read it (and the screenplay)
a number of times and, besides, I'm in the Dept. of Communication and
_Theatre_ here at Lambuth, so it would have some "academic" value as
well.

Jay is on the list, but Jeffo was the one this weekend with the camera
(being a newspaper man, it comes naturally, I guess). So I'm sure those pix
will be up somewhere, sometime.

Speaking of pictures, last Sunday night after the show they took publicity

A couple of things are new. The links page has been corrected (there were
some broken links).

As those who have read the play know, there are several references to the
American TV show "Cagney & Lacey." If you'd like to hear the theme music
from that show (in Real Audio), it's up!

Go to the 'Beautiful Thing' section..... The Play. You'll find it on the
left in the section about the Chicago production.

Enjoy! (and yes, there's more to come).

Actually, I was thinking of the August dates, but, gosh it's been a long
day. <G> I can't go in July because summer term isn't over until the 8th
of August. So that would be the Thursday or Friday night I could go.

Hi there,

As you've probably guessed, I'm new to the btlist.

I just want to say thanks to the guy(s) who made the Beautiful Thing film, and
also a special thanks to the original Author himself.

I have read mostly all the btlist emails that I've received, and they are cool,
so full of many cool people, especially those who dedicate their time and effort
to create such excellent web pages, i.e. www.oak.com/bt

I would like to take this moment to say hello to the following people, and
anyone i've missed, I do appologise, you are all such gifted people, so don't
waste what talents you have.

Hello's to Jeff aka Jexneb
Eric, Keith, Gary, Mark Robinson, Graham Sheldon
Jay, Andy, Kent, Sandra, Hannes, Ian, Bert, Steve,
Donald Taylor, BTLover in Florida, Andre,
Peter Monks,
Kenny Mac, - such cool pictures of Scott Neil !

Hi Stuart,

For those last minute inquiries regarding THIS WEEKEND's BT gathering, the
full intinerary is up on Andre's site...
You might be able to "drop by" and catch them at one of the locations.

Hi everybody,

As a bit of a BT/Scott Neal fan I'm suprised that I have
only just learnt of this email list. I've previously been
to the main sites but because I can't access IRC I gave up
on the thought of ever "chatting" to other fans.

I "met" Ian through the "Bill" forum and so it is thanks to
him that I am here.

Might take me a little while to figure out who's who etc
and what's going on so for a little while I will probably
remain passive.

Good luck to all who are going on the reunion, I'd love to
join you but I'm working, unfortunately.

Just before I go, I understand that Sandra is from Madrid.
There is a huge possibility that I will be studying at
Alcalá as of September so perhaps we could get in touch at
some point?

Keep up the good work on the various BT pages everyone
speak to you later
Sean

Hi all, it's me again (stu)

Just a message to let you know that I can't make it for the London get together,
even though I wanted to. I have my reasons, being work, at Sainsbury's of all
places, and only just found out about this btlist, and am too late ! :(

I trust you all have a great time, and feel free to update me, when it's all
over.

Many thanks for your support,

Don't forget to take loads of pictures.

Instead, if their's a gathering next year, please let me know, and I'll make
sure I can get there.

with love and best wishes.

Hi everyone,

Looking at the itinerary, I should be able to make the Gloucester either in
the morning or the evening. Look forward to meeting you all.

Also, it Jonathan's birthday party soon and two of my friends have invites.
I'll let you know if there is any juicy gossip.. The invites were fab - a
picture of mild mannered JH but by night he is super writer! :)

Love

Neil

Hi,

I've just noticed on the itinerary for the London BT extravaganza this
weekend that the group will be going out clubbing on Saturday evening.
Well, Dana International (winner of the Eurovision Song Contest) will be
playing at G.A.Y. (Charring Cross Road by Tottenham Court Road Tube Station)
on Saturday. An opportunity not to be missed perhaps . . . ? I'm
definitely going!

Neil

P.S. I wouldn't say BT (rather than "Beautiful Thing") too much in England
as it is our telecommunications giant - British Telecom :)

That's Chicago. It's in the State of Illinois, right at the base of one of
the Great Lakes (which is to say the northern part of the US and toward the
middle, east/west-wise). Chicago is one of our bigger cities, and is well
known for a lot of good theatre, arts and culture too. It's also quite
beautiful. BUT, it gets damn cold in the winter! Chicago is also known as
the "Windy City." That's about all I know!
