The address is president@whitehouse.gov
I've written a number of times on different issues. First you will get
an automatic acknowledgment that your message was received.
Then you'll either get an e-mail reply or, on some issues, get a letter
relevant to the issue (a form letter of sorts, yes, but always dealing
with what you wrote about and not some other issue of the day) in a few
weeks or so.
Clinton has done his part so far by executive order adding sexual
orientation to the non-discrimination practices for all executive branch
(White House and cabinet departments) hiring. The yahoos in Congress
want him to repeal it, but that ain't likely. :)

There is no ONE age of consent in the U.S. Each state has set their own, with,
generally, the South younger than in the North. (Go figure.) So there you have

I have to be the Devil's Advocate here for a second...but, is there any way we
can get people to only respond maybe once or twice per day instead of four or
five different emails. My box is becoming full on a regular basis--I do not
want to have to leave this list, but it is almost getting out of control. Most
people responding are doing so several times a day, please limit emails or we
may end up losing fellow bt'ers.
Thanks,

Subject: btlist: re: too many mails
What I see happening is that list members, old and new, get swept up in the
excitement of finding kindred spirits and communicating about something that
they feel very strongly about and their enthusiasm tends to get the best of
them and they begin to converse the way most of us might on a chat channel
or on the telephone. E-mail lists can be structured to encourage longer
slower
less frequent communication if that is indeed the consensus of the group.
I for one, don't have a problem with receiving alot of mail because if I see
that there is a very "exuberant" thread, it might be something I'm
interested in and I'm happy to read all of the messages associated with it
and perhaps respond. If it is a thread that doesn't strike my fancy, or that
I find is offensive or unkind, as has happened recently on the list, I hit
delete and poof! gone just like magic and no hard feelings. There's no
e-squad at my house breathing down my neck telling me I have to read every
single message that comes into my mailbox and I deal with my mail
accordingly. For me, deleting takes a fraction of a second and I personally
consider
the effort worth making in order to remain a member of a list comprised of
exceptionally sweet kind people.
Each list member makes that final unsubscribe decision based on whether they
consider being part of a particular list community worth the minor (or
major, depending upon their perspective) inconvenience of posts that don't
engage their interest. And each unsubscriber is a voice that is missed by
the rest.
I understand the enthusiasm of list members old and new and try to be
tolerant. I also keep my delete finger within reach in case I might
suddenly need it. Maybe just talking about this makes us all a little more
aware that what we say as well as how frequently we say it impacts the group
as a whole.
I'm still loving this list and all of the people on it and I continue to
enjoy the euphoric feeling that came into my life the night I saw a little
film called "Beautiful Thing".

I fear I will be among those writing TOO MANY EMAILS about TOO MANY EMAILS,
but I have to agree with the previous two. Poor Donald, victim of AOHell
spam and LOTS of BT list email!
I know we are zealous in our devotion to BT, but... As in the past two
incarnations of the BT list, the number of emails is getting to be an issue
again.
When you sit down at your computer and retrieve your email and feel
compelled to respond to every one, remember that some people are on similar
lists for their various interests. They get tons of personal email BESIDES
BT list. As a veteran of this and several lists (though I am a lurker here
most often, and yet have been guilty of questionable contributions to the
list), I offer the following:
1) Want to respond to several different BT emails? Do so in one email (but
keep it short!). Makes your email more interesting to read. Don't respond
to each and every one individually. Cut and paste key parts of what you're
responding to. Start a paragraph or section with "As for your point on the
age of consent, Stu ... " Catches that person's attention. Change the
subject to: "Age of Consent, Chicago meeting, etc."
2) Want to respond with a hearty "Me, too"? Don't, unless you have
something to say that adds constructively.
3) Respond directly to the person asking a particular, narrow question.
Strike up a personal email relationship with someone offlist if you have a
particular little point to discuss about BT. Try to keep on topic, though
wandering into other issues that affect us is fine, to a point.
Another example: Take, for instance, the various meetings going on around
the world: London, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta. Examples of a good use
of the BT email list, fostering real-life meetings of BT fans. They have
been handled quite nicely offlist. In the future, in similar situations,
how about just emailing the person asking such a question, telling him/her
you're going to be there, too. Get stuff worked out offlist, where you're
going to meet and stay, and THEN email the list to see whether anyone else
might be lurking and might be interested in doing something.
4) Use the newsgroup, alt.movies.beautiful-thing. It's always needing
contributions. Andy and Chichi have both posted there just today. Good for
them.
5) Use IRC. Vent there. Chat up a storm. Peak times for people on IRC
are noonish most U.S. time zones (and 6 p.m. GMT) and during the evening and
early morning U.S. times and (6 a.m. or so GMT). You take your chances, but
someone might show up. If not, abuse BT-Bot.
6) Write to the archive. It's a wonderful way to express yourself.
I love the list. I eagerly sign on several times a day to retrieve BT
email, but it can be like eating too much candy. Eventually it becomes too
much. And you get a big stomachache. Then you don't want anymore. Well,
you get the picture.
Sorry to vent. This isn't meant to be taken personally. Lurker mode
resumes.
Jeff

As someone *also* more than a little guilty of email bombardment, may I
weigh in here? I think all the comments, especially Jeff's are valid,
and Jeff has an excellent list of suggestions. The one that works the
best for me (and we do it often on the stories list) is to write one
email incorporating responses to several people's posts at once. OTOH,
it *is* tempting, if you check your email several times a day (for those
who can do that) to want to jump in again after some new comment is
made, or new thread is opened.
Personally I can't cut 'n' paste from more than one email at a time, so
replying to several at once resorts in me indirectly quoting different
people in one same letter (and looks less "spiffy"), but it still works.
I also think people's email limits are at issue (my WebTV account maxes
out with 150 messages, for example-- I am really interested to now if
other people-- those with computers-- have similar small limitations
(but I better ask those replies, if any, be sent directly to me!! :));
I do know it takes time to read a lot of emails, but as Jean said
hitting "delete" takes no time at all. As a rule, there has been a
general tendency of this main list to have a lesser number of "personal
asides" in the posts made to it-- or when it does, people don't
appreciate it. I still say that if the sense of personal familiarity
fostered by writing these "friendly letters" to each other *wasn't*
being made, or wasn't *some* part of the list, there'd be less reason to
be on it-- we all do want to get to know each other, don't we?
I think that the answer here, as in so much in life, is *moderation*;
judicious use of self-imposed brakes on one's own excesses (for which I
claim my fair share of guilt!)
Excessive Kent
at least now everybody here knows I am even *worse* re: being chatty
IRL-- I AM "braking", really I am! :)

Please, do not take what I said as an attack on those that respond quite
heavily. I was merely bringing up an issue with me that I am sure is shared by
many. I do not like to delete the messages simply because I figure if someone
took the time to write it, it must be worthy of reading. HOWEVER, when you
work virtualy round the clock and do much of it through your computer, it is
very hard to sift through all the emails to get your work ones out--yes I know
I can set up another email and I have, but that gets confusing too.
Like I said, I REALLY love this movie and LOVED the conversation when it
revolved around the little nuances of BT--the movie tid-bits, web-site
updates, various stages playing, etc but when you continuously hear about the
multitude of meetings on a daily basis it gets a bit much. Can we do a weekly
update on the meetings perhaps? I think that would work well.
Well, need to head out of here and do some work, please take this as
constructibve.

I'm not sure about the mailing list software Andre is using to run the
list, but when I was running it I produced digests once every 24 hours.
These consited off every message sent to the list in one email. Maybe
Andre can do something like this, if the idea is accepptable to people.
Another suggestion, and the method I use myself to is to use email
software which allows you to filter emails based on where they were sent
from, and there subject, and get BT list mail put in a seperate folder.
This way I can manage 50-60 personal emails (in my main folder), 100 or so
from the Linux Kernel Mailing list, and the 20-30 from here.

I agree with Jean. When a subject comes up that one does not have an interest
in, just delete it. If many emails with the same subject appear, and you do
have an interest in, simply skim them to see if you really want to read it.
Of course, if you subscribe to lots of lists, then unsubscribing might be a
solution, as sad as it would be for those who have gotten to know you here.

P.S. 15 emails a day is a lot? I average around 27, 95% from the BT list.

I've just been looking through an interview that Jonathan Harvey did in
1996, and found this snippet concerning Ste and Jamie's age in the film:
"(In the play) ...the two boys are supposed to be 15 and 16, which is
below the age of consent for gay sex. For the film we auditioned
17-year-olds. It's a lot more real, because you're getting a real
17-year-old face responding to this experience.
Obviously the lawyers had to look pretty carefully at it, because these
boys do have a snog on screen. In the end we agreed to take the specific
age references out. That wasn't because of legal problems, but because
Gay Times wouldn't let us show their magazine if it was mentioned that
they were under age. So we changed "I'm 15" to "I'm old enough".
Basically, I had the choice of inventing a gay magazine or taking the
age out, and I felt that it would be truer to take the age out. Everyone
can see that these are 17-year-olds."
(A9 1996 Guardian newspapers.)
Just thought you'd like to know.

Windy City next weekend will be glad we got our tickets early. Uh, right,
Eric? RIGHT???? It's pretty good when a small production gets notice in a
newspaper the size of the Tribune.
As for the Sundance gay film festival, I spent AN HOUR rooting around the
Sundance site, since Mr. Perkins didn't provide complete information. :-)

But where's the kissing scene, luv?

Subject: btlist: Intro/BT movie posters
Hello everyone! I'm generally a lurker but thought I'd say hello. I just
recently joined this list but was on the first BT list started by David
Moody oh those many moons ago in the infancy of the BT phenomenon.
I saw the movie three times over the course of two weeks when it played in
a theater here in Sacramento, CA (where I live) during it's initial U.S.
run. And, of course, I fell in love with this utterly charming film. How
could I not? I'm one of those crazy people who bought it when it first
came out on video, even though it was ridiculously expensive. Well, I work
at Tower Records so I was able to get a nice discount.
Anyway, my main reason for posting was I'm interested in obtaining some BT
posters. I guess I'll be buying a copy of the utterly boring U.S. poster
since it seems to be pretty available at the moment. But I would be VERY
interested in getting my hands on some of the other posters if they are in
good shape (and if they don't cost an arm and a leg). The ones in
particular that I like are the French poster, the UK quad poster, the
regular UK poster, the poster (from UK?) of Ste and Jamie sitting on the
bench, and the poster from Spain. Does anyone know where I might be able
to purchase any of these? I've scoured the web quite a bit and have not
found them. Nostalgia Factory has the Italian poster but I don't much care
for that one. If anyone in any of these countries could point me to a
company that sells posters I would be ever so grateful.
And, for the sake of not inundating the list with this stuff, please feel
free to send me any and all info via my email address, towerman@jps.net
Thanks very much!
cheers,
Bruce
P.S. Maybe some day we can have an "American BT meet"? For us folks
who
can't afford to go to the UK. Just a thought.

I mean it, it makes me feel good all over when people comment about my
stories, it means that people are still liking it. So yeah I wanna say
thanks to you guys.
Kent my friend, I knew about the freezers, well I knew about the 2-door
type, thanks for that little bit of info mate.
> is that how the fridge is shown in BT? Yeah it was mate, if you
remember when Jamie came in from out side, he went in the top half to
get his can of larger.
I'd also just like to say as Kent did, to all the people out there, pop
in now and then to let us know your still there.

For all those going "Huh?", well, Graham (Gray) replied to a reply
Kent had
sent on the other list...the "Fan Fiction" list (btfanlist@tenr.com). It's
all about a story Graham has written where Sandra comes home from a hard
day at the pub and goes to get some food out of the freezer. Kent wanted to
know if UK freezers where at the top of (like they are in the US) or at the
bottom of the refrigerator....and above as you can see was Gray's reply (to
the wrong list!)
BTW, the story in question will appear this friday at the BT-Stories web
site. Look out for "The Club - Part 16".

Hey there, I'm back, from the weekend,
Unfortunately access times is restricted, so I'm not in tomorrow, as the
place I go to, chat, is closed, for training.
Oh, and by the way, I emailed the president concerning the age of consent
for homosexuals, and also talked about equality. I'm waiting for a reply.
THanks chris, for the email address, it came in useful.
love and hugs,

Subject: btlist: Edinburgh BT play - 9-22 August 98
Hi Guys,
sorry to barge in again with my so-called sales pitch, but if anyone
wants to meet up at our production in Edinburgh in August, the
weekend of 15th August has been suggested.
Although I have an interest in the production, after reading the
posts to this list I would really like to meet up with some of you
guys and have a chat about the film/play/life etc. I know that the
cast share my sentiments so we should try to arrange a convenient
date.
Also we are having to get more T-shirts printed than we actually need
for publicity purposes (due to min order restrictions at the
printers), would they be of interest if passed on at cost-price. They
would be fairly tasteful and commemorate our Edinburgh production
(incidentally I believe this is the Edinburgh Fringe premier of
BT!!!) - Let me know your thoughts.
If anyone does want tickets, as I've said before, its easier if I
reserve them via our venue box-office than for people to book with
the general fringe office as they sometimes have large queues. Just
drop me an email for further details. You can catch a glimpse of the
cast on Eric's website.
Thats all for now
keep the faith and your own kind of music
-Peter
p.s. keep on writing - it keeps me sane at work to read your posts!

Subject: btlist: Chicago production
Hello everybody!
Well, I've just succeeded in re-arranging my flight to San Francisco at the
end of July so that I get a 2-day stopover in Chicago on the way. AND I've
been able to book a ticket for the Chicago production of 'Beautiful Thing' for
Thursday July 30th. SO all I need now is somewhere to stay in Chicago on July
29th and 30th. If there's anyone out there who's been to see the Chicago
production and knows of a reasonable hotel that might be available, could you
let me know? Thank you.
If any BT-fans are around in San francisco from Jul 31st- August 5th, or in
New York from August 5th to August 8th, it would be really great to meet
anyone - get back to me!
Take care,
David

Talking about the Pride weekend in Toronto someone asked when it was. It
seems like they were all on the same weekend, this one juust passed. The
attendence was estimated at just over 1 million including the new city
mayor. He told critics that these people were his people too. They helped
put him in office.

Hi all,
A date for a group visit to the BT performance in Edinburgh was tentatively
set for 15th August. However it looks like this may be the Pride UK party
day in London to which I am already committed :( Is there another suitable
day when it would be convenient for us to go? I'll be going at sometime
anyway but would love to share the experience with a few BTers.
Love

Subject: btlist: Chicago Hotels for BT Production
BT Fans-
You've heard much discussion on the phenomenal Chicago production of
Beautiful Thing at the Famous Door Theatre:
http://xochi.tezcat.com/~fdoor/BeautifulThing.html
Some folks have asked about hotel accommodations, as one can imagine
there are hundreds to choose from. I've checked out a couple
reasonably priced options. The three that seem to be in walking
distance and under $100/night are as follows:
Day's Inn
1816 N. Clark Street at Lincoln
312 664-3045 or 800 329-7466
Day's Inn
646 W. Diversey Pkwy at Clark
312 525-7010 or 800 329-7466
Comfort Inn
601 W. Diversey at Clark Street
312 348-2810 or 800 221-2222
Unfortunately they fill quickly, so I'd encourage you, if you're even
thinking about it, to BOOK your room now. They have a cancellation
policy that is NO charge, if cancelled 48 hours before check-in. To
be safe, on the night of Saturday, August 8th (closing weekend), we're
holding four rooms (one for my partner & I and the other three are
available to whoever asks-while they last). The daily rate is $72.
plus tax [Day's Inn on Clark & Lincoln].
If you're looking for days that you know other hearty-loyal BT
listservers will be there, on July 25th Jay from Chicago, Eric from
New York and Jan & I (from Milwaukee) will be going {Jay and Eric are
going the 26th too}.
On August 8th and 9th, Jay, Jan & I (again), and Jeffo from Omaha are
going. Alex from Kansas City and Michael from Columbus, GA are strong
maybe's (a few other out-of-staters are trying to get travel
plans/days off together in order to attend the finale weekend).
The Chicago play ends August 9th.
Hope some of you can trek from wherever to see it (us) in the flesh!
Regards,
TJ

Well the message/letter I wrote to the President, should be as attached to

The problem with me is I'm that good as a writer, for letters that is, and
anything else infact. If you have any comments, which I dare say you
all do, then please feel free to attach them to this letter, and reply
