From: "DJK"
Ummm, THAT party?
Is there a day by day follow through from the night Ste goes to the
boxing with his dad and brother through to the infamous party? If
so, boxing Saturday night. Ste stays with Jamie the same night
(Sat) and Leah sees Ste leave early Sunday morning when she returns
early Sunday from having painted the town red the previous night.
Party Sunday night. Sandra can't have worked. By the time Sandra
arrives at the house to "crown" Leah she has just got out of the
bath (her hair is more or less still wet) and no way would she go to
work at post 10 pm on Sunday night, esp. considering the pubs close
at 10.30/11.00. Re: Jamie's purchase of gay times in the corner
shop. Corner shops open on Sunday for the Sunday papers, so no
problem there. Call me old-fashioned but Ste was probably doing the
washing because, as every good housewife knows, Monday is wash day!
Sandra's comment about "tips last night". Who knows, with her
working hours it's no surprise she was confused! Though I agree
that she probably said it just to get Ste to take the money. A
throw-away phrase. Not that all this is particularly important.
The essence of the film certainly doesn't lie in its timing.
Interesting though. Thank you Kent and everyone who contributed.

That's pretty much the way I'd understood it. It is confusing and
probably another reason y'all lost the empire. <G>
Seriously, though, since many of us used the "English to American"
slang
list to get through the film, are there American films that Brits feel
they also need a translation for?

Enough already!
Right, my turn. Having grown up on a council estate in London, you must
believe me when I say that a party like that could happen on any night of the
week, not just a Friday or Saturday, especially during the Summer. Many's the
night when my sleep was interrupted by party noise from other parts of my
estate and people spilling out from the flat where it was being held.
So, it could have all have happened on any day. The next scenes are definitely
on a school day. We don't know in the film whether Ste went to school that day
or not, unlike in the play when we know that he didn't. He's certainly in his
school uniform, anyway.
On a different note, thanks Kent for your recent piece - beautiful as ever.
And a BIG welcome to the new members, I hope you gain as much enjoyment as I
have from being on the list.
See ya (wouldn't wanna be ya!)

That can be a problem in some American gay clubs. In smaller cities,
where there are only one or two gay bars, there's quite a cross-section
of people and ages. In a city such as Atlanta, it's more specialized.
I'm older than you, but felt I fit in at both the Armory and Backstreet,
though I probably wouldn't have at Fusion. But Atlanta also has
country-western gay bars (complete with line dancing classes!),
lesbian-only bars, leather/levi bars and The Chamber, which is a fetish
club. (Bring your favorite whip! <G>)

Oh, absolutely! :) Actually I go for the dancing and, being Pride
weekend, the clubs Tony and I went to were absolutely packed. I think I
got some bruises from flying arms.

Hi all,
Please remember that Summer Rites is ticket only (£4 I think). If anybody
needs a ticket I can get one for them in my lunch hour/after work in Soho,
and then post it on to them. (Remember the Pride festival is definitely
cancelled on August 15th)
I live literally three minutes walk from Brockwell Park (Summer Rites
location) and may be having a pre-party drinks at 12noon, 1st August.
Anybody will be welcome. I will advise of this closer to the date but
please let me know if you would want to come.
Jamie, I feel so upset about you not going to Pride because you had nobody
to go with. Warwick is right, just shout if you need a friend.
May I also take this opportunity to welcome anybody new to the list. Happy
BTing!
(Apologies for those not involved in this and using the BT list, but hey
we're all friends aren't we?!)
Love

I'm glad I wasn't the only one puzzled by the bedroom layout. The only
solution I can think of is that maybe the flats aren't identical in
layout. They are downstairs but is it possible that upstairs the
bathrooms in neighbouring flats are back to back for plumbing reasons.
If they are then Ste and Jamie could have adjoining rooms. If not they
can't have. But for the purposes of the play they have so let's let art
overrule set design and keep Ste and Jamie close together. I'm sure
they would prefer it that way.

Thank you for your eagle eyes. I missed the clock entirely. I was too

That pretty well ties it up. Sandra can't have worked that night.

I find everyone's comments about how this film has affected them very moving
and always appreciate reading about it and celebrating it with you.
Thanks for the nice comments about the bt stories, Stu. Alot of heart has
gone into the writing of them and Andy has created a beautiful place to
share them on his story archive website. The concepts, styles and sentiments
are as varied as we are and it's always inspiring to see how each of us has
been touched by this play/film's theme and characters (through writing,

Again, welcome to all the new bt lovers. Jean.

A blonde decides to try horseback riding, even though she has had no
lessons or prior experience. She mounts the horse unassisted and the
horse immediately springs into motion. It gallops along at a steady and
rhythmic pace, but the blonde begins to slip from the saddle. In
terror, she grabs for the horse's mane, but cannot seem to get a firm
grip.
She tries to throw her arms around the horse's neck, but she slides down
the side of the horse anyway. The horse gallops along, seemingly
impervious to its slipping rider.
Finally, giving up her frail grip, she leaps away from the horse to try
and throw herself to safety. Unfortunately, her foot has become
intangled in the stirrup and she is now at the mercy of the horse's
pounding hooves as her head is struck against the ground again and
again. As her head is battered against the ground, she is mere moments
away from unconsciousness when........
........the Wal-Mart manager runs out to shut the horse off.

a
gay male by the way he walks or presents himself. We're portrayed as limp

If some of those misguided straights had been with Tony and me at the
Armory or Backstreet in Atlanta during Pride weekend, they would have
had a hard time finding "limp wrists" or effeminate guys. In fact, while
I was on the dance floor and noticing all the smooth, shirtless hunks, I
thought of what some girls I knew would be thinking if they were there
with so many definitely _male_ guys. Of course, it would be frustrating
for them since every single one of those "all-male" guys was gay. :)
Oh, did I mention the T-shirt I wore in the Pride parade? It said,
"Homophobia: n. - insecurity about being heterosexual." :)

I've seen "Trainspotting," and I wouldn't be surprised if some British

really need to _understand_ Ewan MacGregor - just seeing him is enough.

P.S. By the way, you know that we Italians are always complaining about
everything even if we live in a wonderful country and one among the
richest in the world ... but as regards the age of consent ... well, we
do not have one ... simply becouse there is no difference in our law
between eterosexuals and homosexuals... And as far as I know is one of
the few countries in the world ... At least for this we (gays) are not
complaining ... Remember the albun "The Age of Consent" by Bronsky Beat
? On the cover there was the age of consent for each country in the

Real Men Wear Dresses! I am not particularly surprised at the common
misconception and stereotype people have. My brother has not had a

Not to get too defensive here, but some of us believe that you can be a
christian and a homosexual. Check out the gay best selling list (at least in

Homosexuality by Daniel A. Helminiak, PhD. Some of us dont think it is all

Tell it like it is ChiChi! I'm Roman Catholic and I'm gay! If people have a
problem with it, tough shite. They don't have to associate with me if they
don't want to, or I with them. Just because I'm a member of "their" church
doesn't make us joined in any necessarily social way.

You're lucky Jamey. I'm the youngest of six kids. I have a brother who is
bisexual, and a sister who's a lesbian, and I of course am gay. The subject
of homosexuality is unmentioned at family get togethers because it's just too
touchy for all the homophobes in my clan. I especially hear it from my mom
all the time, cause I live with her. She's constantly complaining about my
brother who's married yet still has sex with men while is wife sleeps with
other women, and my sister who just got married to her girlfriend. I've told
her repeatedly about myself, but she denies it and says that I'll grow out of
it when I find the right woman(I'm 23 now, mom. I think I know what I want by
now). What to do, what to do?

I was simply stating that my experiences with the way people interpret

I love God and know that he is my salvation. I also know that God wants
me to be true to myself and not lie. That is why I came out.
I Samuel 12:24 tells us that God has a plan for each of our lives and
that his plan will not harm us. I believe that I am not a mistake. I

He knows who I will love and they are Men.

I am a Christian. I was baptized when I was nine and save for a short

non-churchgoing Evangelical Mennonite. No I don't drive a Buggy.
I am free to be me in the salvation of Christ and he's my friend.
My entire family is straight. I am the first one to come out, anyway.
It used to seem that I was the only gay person in the world. I met
several gays and lesbians since and I am happier. It is sad that so
many Homosexuals are forced out of their families and churches. I no

Hi Jamey & all you wonderful people out there.
School can be a bitch. I was lucky because I had one gay school friend who went
through it all with me. We were no Ste and Jamie but we had our moments.
As to my family: My mother confronted me about it too. I was 21 and I had got
involved with the gay group at University. I usually wore gay badges and forgot
to take one off before throwing a shirt in the washing. My mother found it and
we had the "It's probably all my fault" scene with both of us (but mainly me)
ending up in tears. Unlike your mum she didn't tell my father. I told him
myself a few years later (in retrospect I have no idea why I waited) and he was
okay about it. Not happy, but accepting.
My mother's way of coping with it was to ignore the whole matter. It was never
discussed. If it came up the subject was changed. Jian and I had been together
for eight years before they met him and then it was over my body in intensive
care after a car accident. I nearly had to die before they accepted that he even
existed.
Now they do accept him and I am getting on with them better than ever before.
My brother on the other hand has always been on side and is now planning to
arrange a family gathering for our tenth anniversary next year.
Which is all a way of saying stick in there - things can get better. If your
family can't accept you then remember there are a lot of people in the world who
will and who will love you.

I have tried every video store I can find and they've all had it - but it's no

Ah well they always said patience is a virtue. Anyway I do have a copy but it's
a third-hand version with a somewhat erratic soundtrack. I can put up with it a
bit longer.
Thanks for the suggestion of a UK source (and yes we do use PAL) and yes I am in

Hi Jamey
OK, so you're dad's trying to turn you into a real man. Can he therefore
define the definition of a real man. One definition running through my
head is that it must be someone, who's hard as nails, and hangs around
drinking in the pub, during the evening, and getting into fights.
Ok, maybe not, but it was good anyway.
I think society need's to open up to the real world, and experience real
people, and then they will understand real men. As I live with my step
dad, and mom, and family, they all know about me being homosexual, and
accept it, whereas if it were in a family like ste's from the BT film,
convincing them wouldn't be so easy.
