I love getting almost hourly email (as I sit on my pooter working on other
projects), but... If we do get a lot of new members, perhaps we should
think about a digest. I subscribe to a list for the group Live (hmm, and
you thought BT was my only obsession!). It sends out a digest once a day.
While we wouldn't have to opportunity to respond like this, it would cut
down on the amount of email.

Just a thought.

Actually Simon, I agree with a lot of what you are saying here. It IS
indeed sad that the major film distributors feel that the mainstream world,
particularily in the US, is not ready for male homosexuality projected in a
positive manner. Take for instance the movie's trailer. Although it
contained no sex and no questionable lanquage (except the word "slut" used
by Leah to describe Madonna) or violence, the Motion Picture Association of
America (MPAA) elected to give it (the trailer) an "R" rating. Why?
Because Americans would rather have their children subjected to gratuitous
sex and senseless violence than deal with a real world issue such as
homo-emotionallity? Perhaps I am not jaded enough yet to believe that.

Jeff, I didn't mean to imply that we'll have hundreds on the list, although that
would be very rewarding. What I meant was hundreds more members of the
Beautiful Thing family.

Regarding digests - yes I am looking at that. The current mail server doesn't
support them right now, but will do later this year, or so I'm told.

I could try reverting to SLmail, but there were a few issues with it I'm not happen
about. Whatever I use must be able to able to collect mail for me from many
different email accounts, act as a local POP3 server, as well as SMTP tx/rx too.

If you know of other Win95 software that can do the same thing as
FTGate (www.demon.co.uk/floosietek/) then let me know and I will evaluate it.

Todd,
I recently joined the list, and was astounded when I came in to work the next
morning, and had 17+ messages (from BT). I love it!!! (I'm waiting for my boss to
wonder why the volume of incoming e-mail has just gone up so much!) I love reading
everything everyone else has to say. We all have our own ideas and thoughts, but
at the same time, have so much in common (BT, for one). And I can honestly say
this is the first time ever I have had an intelligent on-going conversation centered
around what it means to be gay. (oops, I guess I'm out now!)

Anyway, love hearing from everyone.

I live in Oklahoma. I read a blurb about BT in The Advocate and
immediately started trying to find wwhere it was playing. I found it
in Dallas at the Inwood theater. I saw it there twice, including once
where I flew down for a day just to see it. I saw it a third time when
I was in San Franscico area this past January. I retned it the night is
released in the U.S. and watched twice that night.
Between the second and third watchings of the movie I bought
the soundtrack (special order) the screenplay and the stageplay.

I've been lurking now for a week -- I joined the list right after seeing

The rabid devotion is akin to that of the My So Called Life list a couple
of years ago.

I guess there's not really a point to my post except to, er, "join the
ranks" of BT fans (and the Glen Berry Appreciation Society). Bought the
soundtrack already, too. This film resonates in so many ways that I can't
even really articulate them yet. <sigh>

Are there any other Canadians on the list, or even more specifically,
people from British Columbia? I have yet to see the video for sale here in
Vancouver, but it will definitely be well over the $100. mark. I haven't
seen the US video cover, but the Canadian one isn't so bad, I don't think.

I'm not going to take sides (on the issue, that is, as to sides of
either Jamie or Ste, while that's another issue <G>), but I remember
my very first impressions of Glen (as Jamie) were, "Well, he's not
really very cute." (That was when I first saw the film, then the web

more I can see what Ste saw in Jamie. :)

I got both the screen and stage scripts from www.amazon.com and the
service (and price) was quite good. There are some large bookstores

Yeah. I've done that a couple of time now and will do so again
this weekend. I've seen Theives, Ridicule, Breaking the Waves, Garden of
the Fitzi-continis (sp?) and I think a couple of others. Those movies
just don't play in Oklahoma. Kida only played at one theater and that
was in Tulsa and only for like a week.

Subject: 40,000+ and going some, Attitude Magazine article, Number of Articles

*40,000+ visitors - and several hundred more every day!

The last time this happened was when the movie was released on video in the
UK, and during the various international releases on the big screen. This
surge seems to be a result of the American video release.

*Attitude Magazine Article.

> Uh, anyone ever heard of copyright infringement?

I always get releases before adding material to the web site, which is
why I think we have so much co-operation from the agents and production
companies.

*Number of Articles

The list seems to be going crazy, the number of emails daily has gone
through the roof. Although it is very gratifying can I PLEASE request that
where-ever possible you combine multiple replies into one email as I'm doing here.

Also, CUT the size of quotes from previous emails in your own posts.

Several people have either complained, or unsubscribed, or both, as a
result of the volume. Additionally, it is causing my modem to be online far
more than I'm happy with during daytime hours, when phone charges to my
ISP are expensive.

I'm going through the process of creating a news-group on Usenet for us to handle
this level of discussion. Once it is operating and has propagated around the news
network we can switch our discussions to it, reserving the list for intensely personal issues.

Here's the proposal I've put forward:

------------------
alt.movies.beautiful-thing

Charter:
Discussion and news surrounding the movie Beautiful Thing, the original stage play,
video, music, it's effect on thousands of fans around the world. Meeting place where
fans can exchange views.

Justification:
The email list supporting the movie is being overloaded with in excess of 60 articles
a day from hundreds of subscribers.

A newsgroup is a more appropriate forum for the type of discussions continued on the
mail list, and easier for fans to use (threads, filters in news-readers for instance).

There are tens of thousands of fans around the world using the Internet who have
already visited the movie's own web site. Many of these want to take part in discussions
but find the amount of email coming from the list a problem.
---------------

If you want to help me get the group accepted, subscribe to the alt.config newsgroup
and make your support for the proposed group known.

Regards, Davie

I know a lot of you are familiar with IMDB (www.imdb.com), but you might

the eleven films I'm showing this term:
(Maximum is 10 points)

Citizen Kane 8.8
Casablanca 8.8
Europa, Europa 8.6
Beautiful Thing 9.1
Wild Reeds 8.5
Au Revoir Les Enfants 8.3
African Queen 8.2
Clueless 7.9
A Midnight Clear 8.8
War of the Buttons 8.7
Vertigo 8.5

Anyone notice what film had the highest rating? Hmmm? :)

Hi everybody,
so many great things have already been said about this wonderful movie.
Nevertheless I feel the need do share my feelings. Never before I have seen such
a touching movie. Outstanding actors who are directed carefully through a
scintillating story, But, at my sader days, I feel some kind of a grief when
watching BT. It's only a film, I tell myself then. Yes, and that is exactly the
grief, istn't it.

Love to everybody

PS: Todd, I agree with you. Glen is oh so cute. Especially when he (or Jamie) is
wearing his glasses.

PPS: Looking forward to seeing you all in Frankfurt.

And I thought Nebraska was bad, Mark. We got BT for a week in Omaha. It
would have played longer had it been at our art theater, but another
theater has an exclusive contract with Sony, so it fulfilled its obligation
and let BT go quickly. Sigh.

Which leads me to ask: Are Mark and I the only ones from the heartland of
America on the BT list? We're talking Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma,
the Dakotas? I'm feeling kind of alone here. Chime in! Let your voices be
heard! The Coasters get a lot of bandwidth on here. ;-)
