I have to agree. The CD cover picture is all wrong. At least it isn't
near as bad as the video cover. It still looks appealing, aside from the
sunglasses. Of course I wouldn't complain if he were dancing with me and
had sunglasses on;-)

This is a new one for me. Beautiful Thing saved me from a huge hangover.
I watched it after a 'happy hour' that lasted 5 hours and included 'I
never'. I decided I didn't want to go to bed so drunk so I watched the
movie and by the time it was over, I had sobered up a little bit. And it
saved me!

Hello all. I just joined this list today.

And, well, I just saw the movie on Tuesday, and got the soundtrack
yesterday!

I do have a question about the film.

What is the deal with Sandra and Tony at the end? Was that a break-up,
or just a butt-out for while? Why did she do that to him? That part, I just
didn't get!

Anyway, I'm a college Senior at Ball State University in Muncie,
Indiana. Yes, it sucks, but oh, well!

I'm also going to doing a work abroad program in England...probably
London in January, so I'm also anxious in talking to anyone from there!

Anyway, nice to meet you all!!!

Hi Brian,

Welcome to the BT list.

Hey, I'm from Indiana, too. Grew up in southern part of the state, Scott
County. That was a long time ago, though. I'm almost 50 now. Live in
Oakland, CA., right across the bay from San Francisco.

Over the few months this list has been in operation, several of us have
mused about the relationship between Sandra and Tony (it is definitely a
break up, by the way). Many of us have felt the confusion you express.

Right from the start Jamie warns Tony that, "Me mum goes off things, fast."
But clearly she is getting irritated with Tony from the point where he
tries to explain "labotomy" to her. She wants more from him than he is able
to deliver. That's my impression. She's also going through changes. She's
thrown out all of Jamie's baby toys (symbolic of his coming of age) and in
a sense, Tony is one of HER toys. She's a powerful woman and she's just
gotten herself a new job with more money, prestige, commitments and
responsibilities. I think she sees that Tony isn't going to meet her real
(as opposed to merely sexual) needs as the woman she is becoming. Although
kinda cute and loveable, he is a bit wimpy, you have to admit. (I think his
character is based on Truedeau's "Zonker" -- looks like him anyway.) The
playwright also had to get Tony out of the way so there could be the dance
scene between Sandra and Leah. Precisely BECAUSE she's just broken up with
Tony, we (as audience) are allowed to wonder a bit about Sandra's
sexuality. No (IMHO), she's not becoming a lesbian, but something important
has opened up in her life.

That's how I make sense of it, anyway. I'm sure everyone on this list has
their own ideas. I think it's great that we get so involved with these
characters that they are like REAL people to us! One of my hopes for this
list is that some of us become REAL people to one another!!

Cao,

Mike

I too am quite hung up over the Sandra/Tony break-up and have two
competing theories. On the one hand - Sandra has an exploitative side and
once Tony has outlived his purpose ( i.e., now that she' moving up in
her career she expects to broaden her horizons) she gives him the heave
ho. On the other hand (and the screenplay tends to offer small support
here), Sandra has just behaved impulsively, she may regret this action in
a day or two. In my "sequel fantasy" (I don't think a sequel would work
in the real world, at least on the level of Ste and Jamie's relationship
- and at least not for 20 years) Tony proves to Sandra that he can and
does "fight" for something he wants by coming back, courting, and
confronting until she comes to her senses.

Welcome to the list, Charles.

The French word *frotter* means "to rub." "Frottage" (not sure of the
spelling) would be one man rubbing his penis against another man's abdoman
to get off.

A British friend of mine pointed out that Ste (rather a boy of his social
class) probably wouldn't know how to say this word with a French accent but
would have made something more like "fro'ege" out of it. Of course then the
joke wouldn't have worked.

Jamie's response was, "It's French. Yogurt." But of course he has that
wrong. The French word for yogurt is "frommage" (sp?) but that's the joke.

Good point Mike. I didn't even put a link to Sandra being able to dance
with Leah at the end. I also think you can kind of tell where Sandra's
relationship with Tony is going when she shows Jamie the picture of the
sofa and makes no mention of Tony. Just her and Jamie putting there feet
up on a cold winters night sitting on the sofa. The first time I saw the
movie, I thought it was peculiar that she didn't mention Tony in that
scene.

Subject: Pilgrimage

Just got back from my own BT pilgrimage. Shot off a whole roll of film!
Started at Thamesmead and ended the day at the Gloucester.

Jay's right! Most of the sites are very very close together. They aren't
all THAT logical, however. I think I managed to find the original flats
(NOT numbered 268, 269 and 270; but 19, 20, 21). I'm fairly certain I
identified them correctly: the balconies are quite distinctive and the way
the flats are arranged (Leah's set back from the other two) is unique in the
estate as far as I could tell. It's not *quite* true to say that the
locations were all logical and cogent so that you could actually imagine
Jamie and Ste actually living in those flats, etc. although I will admit
that it is largely true.

Now I get to split hairs:

The flats are on the 2nd floor and are accessed by stairs only. The flats
are NOT in one of the tower blocks, but in one of the low-rise blocks over
the shops beside the Piazza. I can't be one of the tower blocks, because
none of the tower blocks have the distinctive balconies with sloping
partitions between units. She wouldn't have been able to get her
supermarket trolley into the corridor either, 'cos there's no lift (the
flats being so low) and she'd have had to carry the trolley up the stairs.
The lift you see in the movie is probably from an adjacent tower block. The
stairs are probably for real?

We see Ste sitting by the lakeside crying as Sandra walks back with Louise.
That's real. That's exactly the route Sandra would take to get home.

When we see Sandra following Jamie to The Gloucester, we see her passing
Trevor and Leah on some stairs. I found the stairs (again unique), and they
lead AWAY from the 180 bus stop.

The 180 bus does indeed take you from their doorstep to the Gloucester
(about 30 min bus ride). But you'd have to take it from the OTHER side of
the road from the bus stop you see Jamie getting on. If you take the 180
bus from the same stop as you see Jamie getting on, you will be going in the
OPPOSITE direction.

The bus doesn't actually stop opposite the Gloucester. Is stops a little
way away. Ask the bus driver to tell you when you're at Greenwich Park.
The Gloucester is just by the entrance to the park. There isn't actually a
"bloody great pink neon arse outside of it," and you wouldn't actually know
it was a gay pub from looking at the outside of it. In fact, because it is
so close to the park, in the daytime many of its patrons are just
unsuspecting American tourists. I took some pics of the inside of the pub
and of the cute bartenders!

I didn't manage to find the Cutty Sark (pub) but I did find the Cutty Sark
(ship).

Well, I had a bit of a different outlook on the reason for Tony and Sandra's
relationship not working. My theory is that, the night that Jamie came out
to her, she finally realised that she and Tony were too different to make it
work. There seemed to be a string of examples for that. One being the scene
on the proch when Tony asks if anyone saw University Challenge and all he
gets are blank stares. The best example that I found, tho was the scene on
the balcony the night that Jamie and Ste went to the Gloucester. He tells
her that she's "fighting it" and she asks him what he's ever had to fight
for in his life. I think the basic reason that she dumped was simply that
she is very genuine and down-to-earth and (not to sound classist) very
blue-collar, while Tony is very cerebral and has a very white-collar
attitude. So I guess, after a while, Sandra decided that he was just not the
type of person that she wanted or needed. Lemme know what you think. :)

I think there is ample evidence in the movie to support that view. Sandra
and Tony just aren't compatible. No need to philisophise about whether she
was discovering something about her own sexuality or that she needed to
spend more time with her son. Like Jamie says, his Mum goes off things fast.

My question is in a sequel, how much will Sandra be involved in her son's

kind of mother Jamie will go to when he and Ste are dealing with being
apart (if they don't live together in the flat above the Anchor)? Just a

I think that Saundra and Jamie should move in above the pub as planned.
However, in Ste case, things at home get so bad that Saundra allows him to
move in with them. The day to day activities of Ste and Jamie will allow
Saundra to have full acceptance of their relationship. Here's a twist, the
pub does not do so well to begin with so as an idea, Ste and Jamie suggest
turning it into a gay pub to drum up business. Fear of losing her temp.
license and failure, Saundra tries this idea. This is the turning point of
the pub. It goes from near failure to utmost success. When business is
booming, this is where Leah comes in. Saundra inquires if she was serious
about the job a the pub and allows her to work there -- eventually getting
her out of the apartment building that she is so bored with anyways...
Just a outline, we can fill in the middles later... LOL

True. I wondered about that too. If Ste had actually been intended to
pronounce it like french, then Jamie wouldn't have to point out that it's
french, would he?

Fromage is cheese! Yoghurt's "yaourt". I think this is a joke along the
lines of the "Sixteenth Chapel". As in Monet didn't paint the Sistine

Hello Mike,

If I had seen a non-subtiteled (in Dutch)version of BT, a part of the
dialogue would have been a mystery to me. Only when I read your
explanation I realized that the word Ste says is frottage. But I have to
dissapoint you. The French words for yogurt are "yaourt" and "yogourt".
"Fromage" is cheese in French. So if Jamie would have said "It's French.
Cheese." , the joke you're mentionning would have worked.

Subject: The ongoing debate

I think it is sad that Sandra's relationship doesn't work out because her
problem is she DOES fight eveything. The issue with her boyfriend being too
"white collar" is, to an extent, a great character trait. Let's face it, all
the people whi live in this complex are pretty much different from the norm
(another question - how can you say he is too white collar when he is dressed
like typical american white trash, drives a beat up van, yet watches College
Bowl. That is a GREAT character, he is a living paradox of what a person
appears to be and what a person is). As for the idea of a sequel, that would
undermine the title of the movie and the main plot. Let's be realistic here,
neither Jaimie nor Ste's lives are going to be be easy or fun. Their
happiness and security are unsure, yet despite all of society's feelings
about the two, they have what no other person has in that movie - Real Love -
and that is a beautiful thing. A sequel - probably not. Let Jaimie and Ste
enjoy that one great moment - it might be their last.

Real love? are you sure about that Joe? I know they obviously care about each at the

Didn't she changed her dressing for going to it the night the film ends

The joke about frottage being French yogurt comes from a trendy low-fat

Why wouldn't Ste know basic French pronounciation? French is widely taught
in British schools - at least as much as Spanish is in the States. In my

This was very new to me and I locked it up in the lexicon. :-)

When I first heard the word in the doubted version here in germany I
smiled because of the explanation from Jamie, 'cause I thought of cheese
by the word. A special kind of cheese.

It apears when a man is uncut and not so clean.

In german slang this is caled "Kaese" (cheese). And then a form curd in
german called "Quark" is alsow known as "fresh cheese" here.

instat of the "c".
