- Yes, that was also the first time I heard of the word. The Spanish
- translation was somethig like "I'm all right. I feel great. Everything..
- everything's great."
- Well, the Spanish words were a little stronger and I guess 'pucker' is
- stronger than 'great'. If any of you speaks Spanish, the EXACT words were:
- "Estoy bien, de puta madre. Todo... todo está de puta madre."
-
- Which reminds me of a doubt I still have, when Ste bangs on Rose's door to

- Spanish dubbing says: "Well done, Ste". Is that correct? What's the exact

- Luis, thanks for the "pukka" definition. I had seen that word
- mentioned in one of the translation lists, and thought it could very
- well apply to Ste's dialog. But in the play's script, the word is
- actually spelled "pucker," so it may or may not have the same meaning.
-
- Now, Sharon, your Spanish translation ("Estoy bien, de puta madre.
- Todo... todo est de puta madre.") is pretty fascinating, too. The
- literal translation of "puta madre" is "whore mother" according to
my
- baffled partner. He thinks the phrase might translate to something
- like, "Everything's fine... F*cking FINE!"
-
- I'm surprised this is such a mystery - apparently to the Brits on the

- The Spanish translation is correct. "'At a boy, Ste" is a contraction of:
- "That a boy" which itself is a contraction of: "That's my boy":
e.g., "I'm

-
- Not being British, I hesitate to comment on "pucker" although in the

- you wish ....ahhhh luxury!
-

-
- >>Cass Eliot was a perfect and poignant choice for BT songstress.
-
- - Sorry, but I've forgotten which message I snipped that from, but yes,
- Cass' music is spot on. It was the perfect choice (J Harvey was
- responsible was he not?), although when I first heard the film featured
- music by Cass, my queer-cooool antennae shriveled and I baulked at the
- idea. Just the fact that everyone here seems to quote from Make Your Own
- Kinda Music shows how the song digs into the heart and soul of so many
- people - gay or straight. I'd been hoping to get a performer friend to
- cover it at next week's local (Brisbane, Australia) pride festival rally.
-
- While not wanting to discourage any royalties which might flow to those
- involved in the film from the official soundtrack, a cheaper CD featuring
- original versions of Dream a Little Dream of Me, I Can Dream Can't I, It's
- Getting Better & MYOKOM called the Best of the Mamas & Papas is available
- here for about $15.00 (Also on MCA).
-
- Anyway, all, I look forward to reading your messages each day. Perhaps I'll
- post something of more substance after I've watched the video & refreshed
- my memory of this brilliant & optimistic film.
-
- PS: I didn't even know the Gloucester existed when I used to visit

-
- I haven't seen Lilies (that's how it is spelled in the promo below) but it
- is showing at the San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Film Festival on Thursday
- June 26. Here's what the promo says about it:
-
- "Video-artist-turned-filmmaker John Greyson comes into his own with this
- intensely cinematic refashioning of Michel Marc Bouchard's play *Les
- Fleurettes*. The setting is a men's prison circa 1952, where Bishop
- Bilodeau arrives to hear the confession of Simon, sentenced forty years
- earlier to life for the alleged murder of his teenage love Vallier. But the
- occasion is a ruse: It's really the Bishop whose confession Simon aims to
- procure. Religious ritual turns into a play, and the Bishop is forced to
- confront a past he'd much rather forget.
-
- "Midway between Shakespearian idyll and Genetesque rebellion, _Lilies'_
- cunning invention deepens Greyson's characteristic wit with great passion
- and tragic betrayal. While the theme of romantic love resonates as
- powerfully in the present as in the flashbacks, it's the visual design of
- _Lilies_ that truly captivates. Elegant compositions and overwrought
- staging dust tragedy with irony and conjure fantasy out of thin air. In the
- end, the brave young Vallier's murder is made viscerally shocking by the
- oh-so-decorative route its telling has taken."
-
- I've heard good things about this film. It has been playing in some of the
- theatres here but haven't gotten around to seeing it yet. But it doesn't
- sound like a Canadian BT, much less an American one.

- Another point about "pucker" is that Ste uses it rather ironically. He
- says he is fine, just fine, but we know he isn't and his non-verbal
- communication says so. He says the word twice, more emphatically the
- second time. He is definitely _not_ "pucker," he is confused, upset and
- more.
- Interesting to me also is that when he asks Jamie, "Are you?" in
- response to Jamie's assertion that Ste is afraid being called "queer,"
- Jamie says, "Queer?" and Ste responds with "gay." Ste is asking
Jamie
- if he is _gay_, which would be more civil and polite and less accusing
- that asking him if he's _queer_. Plus, it allows Jamie to respond by
- playing up the double meaning of "gay" by saying, "I'm happy" as he
- first expresses his real feelings for Ste.

- PS - I thoroughly enjoyed "Beautiful Thing"! Turned all of my friends onto
- it without any problem. It was simple, charming and the epitome of how
- young love should be - whether it be gay, straight or whatever. A friend's
- mother even walked away from the movie feeling great! Now that is
- definitely a reaction that I'm sure the movie hoped to bring about!!

-
- Okay, let's see if I can be clear for once!
-
- The news-group is intended for all the chatty stuffy that goes on, things that aren't
- sensitive or private. Stuff like 'are they gay' 'what does pucker mean' 'who's in
- Florida'.
-
- The list is for stuff where you want to share something personal with your friends,
- and not have it open to the world as it is in news. It might be a coming out story,
- or an observation about the movie that includes something about your own life, it
- might be to discuss issues raised on the news group that need to be aired in front of
- our closed community, but not to the whole world.
-
- There are no hard and fast rules. Common sense should dictate what is appropriate for
- each forum.
-
- I'm not going to ask people not to post to the list. I would like the volume on the
- list to reduce, and the trivial stuff that keeps my server awake moved to the news
- group as soon as most ppl can see it.
-
-
- Regards, Davie
