I first saw BT on filmfour early '99 and really enjoyed it but it wasn't until recently that I watched it again. This time it has really affected me and made me completely re-evaluate my life, it gets to you on so many levels it is hard to know where to s art. I wish BT had been around when I was at school as I know things would be different in my life now. I have struggled to come to terms with my sexuality for years(i'm now 28) and it's only in the last few years I'm starting to feel happy about who I am Young gay people need support and understanding when they start to come out and I feel that if they watched this film at that time it would make it alot easier. To all young gay people I would just like to say you are not the only one and there are alot f genuine people out here who can help. I just purchased Beautiful Thing and the Soundtrack. This movie is fanastic. Can't see it enough. This is probably the first entry in quite sometime. But it just started airing on US stations. On HBO, HBO Plus, Sundance, and The Movie Channel. I cannot get enough of it. But if you are American, you will need closed captioning to really understand the terms and phrases used. It is something that I would highly recommend.

Saw the movie just recently (march 99) - a bad french translation at that - and was ... just overwhelmed like so many others. Ive never experienced a relationship like the one portrayed in this movie and while watching it I realise how starved I was for omething like that... I think that Beautiful Thing is one of the most profound films of the 90's...this movie doesn't only venture the boldness of reacting on our feelings with a friend, but the feelings and emotions that go along with it. I loved the acting by Ste and Jamie, no big "Hollywood Actors" could have pulled this one off. My favorite part was the love that was growing within Jamie, and Ste not sure if he wanted it to be known just yet. The end was Fantastic...I cried. I have a new respect for The Mamas and the Papas. I first saw Beautiful thing on C4 TV in 1997, I was aware of a relaxed interest whilst watching the film. While I am hetrosexual I had a feeling of closeness with the two young men and an understanding of their mixed feelings towards each other at the beg ning which turned to a love for each other which I found very moving and very happy at the same time. I have since puchased the video and watched it many, many times. It is an outstanding film with a true to life story to tell one which I will never tire of. Johnathan Harvey has created a play and film he can be truly proud of. I'm not gay but I'm very happy after the very moving experience of Beautiful Thing. Bernie Cornthwaite

Just saw Beautiful Thing on video. I cried when Jamie told his Mom, I cried when Ste was outed to Jamie's Mom, I cried when they kissed under the trees, I cried at the end. It may be optimistic, but that's what makes this coming out movie so amazing and d lightful. I wish I saw it on the big screen, but at least I can watch it on video over and over. As so many others have stated, I thought this was a wonderfully uplifting movie that I easily identified with. I'm a bit dissappointed at some of the criticizm based on the "Oh no! Not another coming out story." perspective. While coming out isn't the o ly part of a Gay person's life, it is one of the most important, and for some the most tramatic. We have seen more and more films about daily Gay life - the "post coming-out stories" such as Love! Valour! Compassion! Dispite the concerns of some, I'm ha py that this coming out story was added to the genre. I applaud all those involved in Beatiful Thing's creation. A special congrats to Glen Berry and Scott Neal (Jamie Gangel and Ste Pearce) for protraying such realistic and believable characters. An especially tough feat considering their age and the fact that both actors are straight. At the age of these two actors, portraying young lovers in a convincing manner is tough enough. To make it more of a challenge, they were faced with the task of portraying young gay lovers. Kudos!
