I am a California kid but used to live in Virginia. If you like history, then Virginia's for you. Sorry I can't help you with a place to camp because I haven't been back in about 10 years.
Places not to miss:
Colonial Williamsburg: Don't buy a ticket to get in to the venues, you can see and hear just as well without spending the money. The Restored area is wonderful and open to the public. I would recommend the tour of the Governor's Palace (that costs extra).
The Williamsburg Pottery: Best cheap shopping in the world. (On Highway 60).
Jamestown: The fort and the restored areas are wonderful. There is a glassblowing shop that is fascinating. You drive around the island and there are murals, etc. explaining life in 1605.
Yorktown: See the battlefield - its free and a beautiful place to picnic.
Colonial Parkway: A 21 mile cobblestone drive that connectes Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown. Beautiful drive through wooded glens.
There are the plantations that you can visit in the area but they all charge admission.
Busch Gardens: Great amusement park on Highway 60 near the restored area.
There is a lesbian bar in Norfolk called "The Hershe" bar. A place that might help you find camping spots is a Women's RV website. I don't have the URL but if you go out and search on Women's RVing you will probably find it. I think its called Women on Wheels or something like that.
