"The Capitol Rotunda"

Girth and Mirth of Washington, D.C.

Issue 2 Volume 21February 2004
President's Corner
by Jim E.

Well, winter reared its ugly head in January and gave us more ice and snow than anyone could want. As a result, the January social at Kevin's home in Maryland was not as well attended as we could have hoped. A few brave chubs and chasers did manage to fight the ice that evening and had a good time. What was served to those hearty men? ICE CREAM, of course. No better way to warm you up than a big bowl of your favorite frozen dessert!! Hopefully, that was the last of the major winter storms we will have to endure this season, so let's get geared up to having a great year of socials and special events with Girth and Mirth of Washington, D.C.

At the last board meeting, it was decided that since Washington, D.C.'s gay and lesbian community supported us so strongly during Convergence last September that the club would show its strong support for the community by making two generous donations to two worthy causes. As a result, we have sent the Whitman Walker Clinic a gift of $500.00. In addition, we have sent the Washington, D.C. Gay and Lesbian Center $500.00 in order to help their efforts to start a local meeting place in D.C.

February Social - Be My Valentine?

On February 21st we will hold our next social at Rich Z's home in Springfield, VA. It will have a Valentine's Day theme, although the social is one week after the actual romantic holiday. Rich will be serving hot dogs (I know that is probably the closest to "real sausage" I will get on Valentine's Day) and all the condiments. Snacks and beverages will also be served. So grab your sweetie and come join the fun. Don't have a sweetie? Well you ain't goin' to find him sitting alone at home with Ben and Jerry! Come out and attend a social. Who knows what romance might await you. And even if Mr. Right isn't there this time, maybe Mr. Right-Now will be!!

The social will be free to members and first time guests and $4 for returning guests.

For directions to the social at Rich's home in Springfield, VA call Joe W. at 703-971-5868 or email the club at: G&M of Washington, DC

Recipe Corner

I saw this recipe on Food TV (my favorite cable channel) and have to share it. It was on "Paula's Home Cooking" with Paula Deen and it's for:

EGG CASSEROLE

8 hard boiled eggs
1/4 cup margarine
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups half-and-half
1 teaspoon House seasoning, recipe follows
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1 cup freshly grated Gruyere
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Gently remove the shell from the hard-boiled eggs and cut in 1/2. Place cut side down in a baking dish greased with margarine.

In a saucepan, melt the margarine, add the flour, and cook, stirring for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the half-and-half gradually, and stir until mixture thickens and season with House seasoning. Add the dry mustard and the Gruyere and stir until melted. Pour the sauce over the eggs and sprinkle top with Parmesan. Bake for approximately 20 to 30 minutes until bubbling and top is golden brown.

House Seasoning:

1 cup salt
1/4 cup black pepper
1/4 cup garlic powder

Mix ingredients together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

Gay Poetry

James

behind glass,
blue jewels with quiet passion,
are looking into my life.
ivory skin,
trembling with desire,
has evoked the mystery within.

in the distance,
there are lullabies,
gently covering the night sky.

cosmic poetry has brought me to my knees,
and made me realize,
that a match has been lit.

I hope it turns into a forest fire...
