By far Europe's biggest.Londinium was founded by the Romans in 43 AD on the marshy banks of the Thames.London's expansion really began in the eleventh century when it became the seat of the last successful invader of Britain, the Norman Duke, William the Conquerer. Little is left of Medieval London which was destroyed by the GREAT FIRE in 1666 in Pudding Lane which annihilated more than 13,000 houses and more than 90 churches completing a cycle of destruction begun the year before by the GREAT PLAGUE which killed about 100,000 people. Nowadays London's special atmosphere comes not from its buildings but from the life on it's streets. |
