Finland is, along with the Faroe Islands, the only Nordic country (Greenland, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland) that doesn't have partnership laws (marriage) for same-sex couples. For further information, go to the page on Finland. Over 90% of Åland's 25,000 people live on the Main Island, and over 40% of the population (some 10,000) now live in the only town, Mariehamn - The town of the thousand lindens. Åland stands outside the taxation union of the European Union (EU) as a member of the EU. Åland was originally Swedish (hence the Swedish language), but was lost to Russia with Finland in 1809. Following Finnish independence from Russia in 1917, Åland wanted to rejoin with Sweden, but met major resistance in the Finnish government. In 1921 the newly formed League of Nations settled the matter, granting Åland autonomy within the Finnish Realm, preserving its Swedish language and culture.
