Information on the situation for homosexuals
in the Bahamas:
Legal
The Bahamas is a beautiful place
on the surface, but homosexuality is still a hot issue. The Bahamian government
invited in early 1998 a cruise ship with over 900 gay men to land at Stirrup
Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line's private island, after being rejected by the
Cayman Islands. However, the whole thing did not come through due to bad
weather. The visit to this private island was strongly protested against
by anti-gay activists and church leaders in Nassau.
I previously claimed that
homosexuality was illegal in the Bahamas. Recent statements by Prime Minister
Hubert Ingraham, who clearly said that homosexuality was not a crime, and
National Security Minister Frank Watson, who announced that the Bahamas
military, prison service, and police force do not discriminate based on
sexual orientation, made me change the status. "Whether a private sexual
act between consenting adults is homosexual or heterosexual is not my business,
and I do not think it is your business either," Prime Minister Ingraham
said in a televised speech in April '98.
The government of the Bahamas
does not promote or encourage homosexual lifestyles but neither does it
condemn or exclude persons who reveal themselves to be homosexual.
The drinking age in the
Bahamas is 18.
