Information on the situation for homosexuals
in Belize:
Illegal(?)
(not mentioned)
Belize, formerly British Honduras,
became an independent country within the British Commonwealth on September
21, 1981. Belizean human rights statutes prohibit discrimination based
on "sexuality," which is sometimes interpreted as including sexual orientation.
However, not only are same-gender sex acts treated as illegal, but immigration
by "homosexual males or females" (as well as those making money from homosexual
behaviour) is prohibited.
Belize seems to be quite
homophobic. This was very clearly displayed when a Norwegian Cruise Line
ship with some 900 gays wanted to land at Belize City for a few hours in
the beginning of 1998. This was met with a huge amount of protests as many
Belizeans have many misconceptions about homosexuality. The cruise ship
did, however, land with no major mishaps or scandals taking place.
Belize's attitude towards
homosexuality makes me personally very sad, as Belize has been a dream,
and the most wanted tourist destination for me for the past ten or twelve
years. Now, I feel I would not contribute a single penny to a country which
clearly hates me so much!
