This is quite contradictory to the view many foreigners have of Brazil as a paradise for gay men, especially during the carnival season in the big cities. The fact is that legislative moves are made for passing homosexual partnership laws ("gay marriage") of a Scandinavian model, but at the same time, large groups of both police and civilians make gay bashing their favourite pasttime. Although homosexuality is not illegal, the police use the pretext of "Safeguarding morality and public decency" and "preventing outrageous behaviour" to stop, arrest and bring homosexuals to trial, whereas they would not bother heterosexuals in similar situations. Several cities have adopted anti-discrimination regulation which protect homosexuals. Gay and/or Lesbian movement: One group "Grupo Gay de Bahia" has existed since 1983. "Triangulo Rosa" in Rio de Janeiro and Lambda in São Paulo are political lobbying groups. There are several other groups, some of which are lesbian. Since 1979, a lesbian information group (GALF) has been active; it publishes a quarterly magazine. If you have any further information on the current situation in Brazil, please contact me.
