Information on the situation for homosexuals
in Canada:
Legal
Canada has surprisingly gay-friendly
laws. It has national legislation which bans discrimination on the basis
of sexual orientation, and in 1996 Canada included sexual orientation in
its Human Rights Act.
Sexual orientation has been
accepted as a grounds for political asylum and lesbians and gay men have
been allowed to immigrate on the basis of a relationship with a Canadian
citizen on a case-by-case basis. Being lesbian or gay is no bar to serving
in the military.
As in most other places,
it's in the big Canadian cities where homosexuals most easily can live
normal lives. There are large gay communities in many cities, like Vancouver,
Toronto, and especially in Montréal. Québec, being the most
"European" of the Canadian provinces, is quite liberal in many areas, like
drinking age (18 - low for North America!) for instance, and the same age
of consent for all sexual activities.
It has come to my attention
that the ban on anal sex with anyone under 18 has been repealed in court.
This is at least true for Québec and Ontario. I don't know whether
the ruling is binding in all provinces, though. The age of consent is 14
for all sexual practices unless the older person is in a "position of authority".
The age of consent is 12 if the age difference is less than two years and
one is not in a "position of authority". (Note that the age of consent
in Québec still is 16 as far as I know.)
Escort services are legal
in Canada, while street prostitution isn't. Buying sexual services from
anyone under 18 is illegal.
I myself spent one year
in this vast and wonderful country in my early twenties, but the only homosexual
"experience" I had was walking nervously past a gay bar in Windsor, Ontario.
