Information on the situation for homosexuals
in Finland:
Legal
The
unequal age of consent was voted against by the Finnish Parliament on June
17th, 1998. As part of an overview of the whole crime bill, the age of
consent for homosexual acts was lowered from 18 to 16, the same age as
for heterosexual acts. Finland, along with the Danish dependency of the
Faroe Islands, is the only Nordic country that does not allow gay marriages.
This is greatly discussed in Finland, and I expect major changes in the
legislation to take place soon. Otherwise, the situation is fairly liberal
and tolerant here, as in the other Nordic countries.
Sexual orientation has been
accepted as a grounds for political asylum and being lesbian or gay is
no bar to serving in the military.
