Information on the situation for homosexuals
in France:
Legal
France may very well be the
next country in the world to allow same-sex marriages. The government of
France is planning a "common interest pact" which resembles the partnership
laws of the Scandinavian countries. Just recently, though, Sweden's embassy
in Paris was not allowed to perform partnership registrations (same-sex
marriages) for Swedish citizens; technically the embassy is Swedish territory.
The embassy is a popular venue for Swedish couples to get married in. But
heterosexuals only!
In many ways, France, and
especially Paris, is a fairly liberal place for homosexuals, but with the
recent growing support for extreme right wing forces in this country, I'm
worried about the situation on the local level. Several local governments
are run by the extreme right with devastating consequences for e.g. immigrants
and homosexuals.
Homosexuals are protected
by anti discrimination laws, and in 1997 an Algerian was granted political
asylum based on sexual orientation. In spite of the right wing influences,
I'm hopeful for France.
