Information on the situation for homosexuals
in Hong Kong:
Legal
Sex between men was illegal
in Hong Kong until 1991. Sex between women was never illegal. There is
still an unequal age of consent for homosexual and heterosexual acts. Hong
Kong even has an unequal age for the male and female in heterosexual acts.
Hong Kong became a part of
communist China on July 1, 1997 after 156 years of British colonial rule.
It is, however, supposed to be a "special administrative region" for 50
more years and "maintain its lifestyle and economic system". This arrangement,
called "one country, two systems", was the idea of former communist leader
Deng Xiaoping.
There are several les-bi-gay
organizations in Hong Kong, and several gay/gay friendly bars popped up
after the legalization in '91. In February 1998, a Tongzhi Conference
was held in Hong Kong. Some 200 Chinese delegates from 17 countries, including
communist China, participated.
