Information on the situation for homosexuals
in Iceland:
Legal+
Iceland is a very proud, small
republic in the outskirts of Europe geographically, but surprisingly modern
and connected to the world. In many ways the Icelanders are very conservative.
They go to any length preserving their ancient language of the vikings,
creating new words for every loan word that attack them.
However, they elected the
world's first female popularly elected head of state, Vigdis Finnbogadóttir,
on June 29, 1980. She is very popular, and her precidency lasted until
June 29, 1996. Two days earlier, the Icelanders continued the Nordic tradition
of human rights and equality by passing a law allowing registered partnerships
("marriage") between people of the same sex. Seven countries and territories
have introduced similar laws: Denmark, Norway, Greenland, Sweden, Iceland,
Hungary, and the Netherlands.
In 1997, Iceland became
the 12th country in the world to legislate anti-discrimination laws against
offences related to the sexual orientation of individuals.
