Information on the situation for homosexuals
in Jamaica:
Illegal / not mentioned
Jamaica is believed by many
to be the most hostile island toward homosexuals in the Caribbean. The
laid-back, anything-goes image propagated by tourist boards is greatly
tarnished by the numerous gay-bashings in this country. Just mentioning
homosexuality may stir up a riot, and many, especially priests and spokespersons
of the Protestant faith come up with very homophobic statements.
The attempt to include homosexual
rape in the country's rape law was met by protests and stalled as many
felt this would give legal acknowledgement to sex between two consenting
adult men!
Gay tourists to Jamaica are
advised to show no affection in public. In many countries, gays, sympathizers,
and even some travel agencies are boycotting Jamaica as a tourist destination
due to the resorts' discrimination towards same-sex couples.
