Information on the situation for homosexuals in Japan: Legal The legality of homosexual relationships is not mentioned in Japanese law, however, it's treated as legal. Among gay men there seems to be a divide between those who only prefer other Japanese men and those who prefer foreigners. There is even a term for Japanese men who prefer foreigners: "Gaisen".

As of 1998 transsexuals may have sex operations.

Concerning the age of consent, some provinces and regions make out their own laws. Generally, the age of consent is 13 (other reports state 14, some 12), but in some places the age of consent is set locally as high as 18.
