The Jordanian legal system
is based upon both civil law and Islamic Sharia laws. There are
even religious courts. Both men and women over the age of 18 are eligible
to vote and King Hussein has on several occasions stressed the need for
political pluralism and democratic freedoms. The legal status of women
in Jordan is questionable.
