Illegal All homosexual acts are illegal in Libya. Libya is known to severely enforce the Islamic Sharia law against homosexual sex. Homosexual acts may result in three to five years' imprisonment. Pornography is illegal, as well as most western publications, such as newspapers. Libya is a strict military dictatorship under the rule of Colonel Muammar al-Qaddafi. While Libya does have a totalitarian regime, the standard of living has increased, and Libyan women are among the most liberated in the Arab countries. Many women choose not to cover their hair. There aren't any night-clubs, bars, theatres etc. in Libya. 50% of the population is under the age of 15. Medical care, education and most social programs are free.
