Information on the situation for homosexuals in Lithuania:

Legal

Homosexuality was legalized on July 3, 1993, one month after Lithuania was admitted into the Council of Europe and three years after gaining independence from the Soviet Union. Lithuania, although the first Baltic country to gain independence, was the last to repeal the article of the penal code, largely under the pressure from the Council of Europe.

Lithuania is very much a catholic country, and is, along with countries like extremely catholic neighbouring Poland, among the European countries where people show the least acceptance of homosexuals. The church is very strong, influencing even politicians at the highest level, thus closeting Lithuanians who otherwise are known to be quite outspoken.
