Legal No information on the situation for homosexuals in Mali was found, except a couple indications that it is legal. I couldn't find much on Mali on the Internet at all. Mali became independent from France in 1960, at first in a union with Senegal. After a military coup in 1991, a multiparty republic was approved in 1992. A predominantly Muslim country, visitors to Mali should dress conservative. For being a Muslim country, Mali is a relatively free and open society. Young male students of the Koran can be found begging for food in the streets as part of their training. Young men of the Fulani wear make-up, but that is to impress women. Sex between men can be fairly common and not frowned upon. It is not really regarded as homosexuality, especially on the active part. Even gay men are expected to marry a woman.
