Illegal Homosexuality is completely illegal in Mauritania, even lesbianism. I have read that there possibly is a death penalty for homosexual acts, but this has not been confirmed. Mauritania is an Islamic North African country. Islam is the state religion. There are reports of torture, persecution, and even massacres, especially directed towards the black population in the south. Others describe this country as friendly and relatively safe for tourists. As a traveller to Mauritania, do dress conservative. Avoid overland travel across the borders, but if you do, expect thorough searches. Mauritania gained its independence from France in 1960. From 1975 to 1979, Mauritania occupied the southern one third of of the former Spanish colony of Western Sahara, which is now completely occupied by Morocco. If you have any further information
