Legal Homosexuality was legalized in Moldova on June 15, 1995, when the Parliament repealed Penal Code Article 106. This was a result of lobbying by the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) and Moldova's aspiration as a signatory to the European Convention of Human Rights to become a member of the Council of Europe. Moldova became independent following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Soviet ban on homosexuality punished sodomy between consenting adults with up to three years in prison. Between 1918 - 1940, Moldova was a part of Romania, called Bessarabia. Earlier on, Moldova had been occupied whole or in parrt by Austria, Turkey, and Russia, but had a brief experience of independence in 1917/18 after the Russian revolution.
