Illegal / Legal Male homosexuality is illegal and punished with up to three years' prison term with re-education through forced labour. Lesbian sex is legal (not mentioned). Mozambique gained its independence from Portugal on June 25, 1975. It is one of the world's poorest countries, due to a civil war that raged from independence to late 1992. The re-building of the country is slow. In many areas, the infrastructure is virtually non-existent. All of the countryside is cluttered up with land mines and the clean up may take decades. Fraud and bribery is a way of life, especially among police and officials. The Health Ministry reports that nearly 6% of the population is HIV-positive. Unofficial sources claim the numbers may be higher. If you have any further information
