Illegal / legal Male homosexuality, defined as "sodomy", is illegal on the New Zealand territory of Niue. The punishment for sodomy is up to ten years' prison term. Attempted sodomy may result in up to five years' imprisonment. There are no laws against lesbianism. Niue became a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand on 19 October 1974. Niue defines its own laws except on international and defence issues. One example is driving, which, opposed to the mother country, is done on the right hand side. Another is the anti sodomy law... Niue is a very religious island. On Sundays, activities like boating and fishing are illegal. Internationally, the island is definately most well known for the popularity of its Internet country code .nu, which means "now" in Swedish and Danish and, of course, is a popular American transcription of "new". No information on the age of consent for heterosexual and lesbian sex was found. A good guess is 16, the same as in New Zealand. Further information on Niue can be found at: |
