Legal (?)

Homosexuality is legal in Peru, however, persecutions of gays and lesbians occur. Gays and lesbians are often jailed on very loose grounds. The government and office of the President have expressed anti gay statements.

Peru had its first gay parade in July 1997. There are several lgbt organizations. One is The Homosexual Movement of Lima (MHOL), founded in 1983. Gays are prohibited in the military. Homosexual activity in the armed forces may be punished with 60 days to 20 years' imprisonment.
