Berlin, Germany - Page 2

On our first full day in Berlin, we did all the touristy things that people do. We started with the (former) West.

Here's the Gedaechtnis Kirche. It was "destroyed" during World War 2 and they never fixed it up, preferring to keep it as a reminder.

Here is a photo of Simon and I posing on the "Ku-Damm" (the main shopping street of Berlin.

Simon and Frank rested on the steps of the Siegessaeule (Victory Column)...

... while I took this photo.

Then we climbed to the top. Here's a close-up of the (real) gold statue on top.

And to really illustrate how big this thing is, here's the view (looking eastwards) from the top. Pretty high, huh?

We walked along the street you can see above towards the (former) border between east and west. Here's a photo of the Reichstag (German Parliament). We didn't bother waiting with all the other people pictured to actually go inside.

This is the Brandenburger Tor. The border dividing Berlin was pretty much here.

In fact, this is exactly where it used to be. Last time I was here (1990), bits of wall were still standing. I've got a large chunk at home.

Once you've crossed this line, you're in the East...
