Moving to Sydney - Part 2
I got back to Cologne and set about the task of moving out of the apartment.
I sold the computer, sent some books home, bought another suitcase into which I crammed as much as I could in.
A friend of mine (David) from New Zealand came to stay for my last few days in Germany. Thank god Tom was able to give us both and our baggage a ride to the airport. Funnily enough, the weather on my last day in Germany was nice. Cold, but nice.
I said goodbye to my friends at the airport and got on the plane. Goodbye Europe! *sob*
After a quick stopover in London, we (the planeload of passengers) took off for Los Angeles. Luckily, I had an empty seat next to me, so the guy in the aisle seat and I piled out respective belongings on it to maximise our legroom. That guy was also in IT (computers), so we actually had meaningful conversation to break up the flight.
In between the fragments of conversation, I looked out the window and took photos. This is a town in Greenland.
We flew over the North Pole (or thereabouts), so we witnessed an amazing phenomenon. This is a sunset over the Arctic).
This is a sunset in reverse (about an hour later - still facing west). The sun crept back over the horizon. I guess you had to be there.
And here are a couple of shots taken high above a frozen Canadian town, and river.
And if you look closely, you'll see that this is Salt Lake City from 36,000 feet.
We landed on-time in Los Angeles. Then, after a four-hour stopover (LA International is so boring - nothing to do!), I boarded my 14-hour Qantas flight to Sydney (their longest route). Boy did that flight drag on! I did manage to get some sleep though (thanks, sleeping pills).
Here's Middleton Reef in the Pacific, just before landing in Australia.
How does the story end? It doesn't. I'm still in Sydney. To see photos of Sydney (from the air too) and the new apartment, click the link below.
