For Queer Mice

The "D" Word

Last column in describing a lesbian website I used the word "dyke". I sincerely hope that no one was offended by me using it because it definitely wasn't my intention. My only excuse is that there are so many self-named lesbian websites with "dyke" in the title that I've become used to it. So this week I'm putting my foot in my mouth and highlighting the best of them. Be warned, however! These grrrls are rough, tough, gruff, and they've had enough!

E-mail me!What better way to start our journey to cyberdykedom than Welcome to a Dyke's World? These stunningly beautiful pages by Indina Beuche "celebrate lesbian visibility and diversity in all its dignity and various colours." You'll be lost for hours in over 200 sites including chat rooms, message boards, animated GIFs, classified ads, erotic stories, cartoon corner, art gallery, photos, guestbook, survey, news, web tips, African femmes, Mega Morph, and LINKS! Whew! I'm exhausted already and we've just started! This lesbian metropolis is at http://www.qworld.com/DykesWorld/. You go grrrl!

So you're ready for some hot 'n' heavy lesbian chat. You've done your finger exercises. You've got your C-U-C-Me camera all set. But are you wearing the right clothes to make a good first impression? The sisters at d.y.k.e. Equipment Clothing Co. are ready to bundle you up in caps, t-shirts, tank tops, and sweatshirts at http://www.gayweb.com/323/323home.html. Nothing says "Yes I Am!" like a "Genuine Intelligent Radical Lesbian" t-shirt! Order yours today!

If you're a dyke and you know it and you just want to show it then tell people your web site is Made With Dyke Pride. Copy these free graphics at http://www.txdirect.net/~sassyfem/dykepride.html for your page. Show your queer pride and get a nifty logo to boot!

grecomp1.gifFor people like Pat Robertson and Fred Phelps, Alison Bechdel is one of the most dangerous Dykes to Watch Out For. Her wonderful comic strip started in 1983 is now in over 50 queer and alternative newspapers and six book collections. Catch some of her latest strips at the Open Prairie Syndicate website at http://www.visi.com/~oprairie/bechdel/bechdel.html. So join Mo, Sydney, Lois, Clarice, Ginger, Thea, Raffi, and the rest of the gang without waiting for the latest St. Louis News-Telegraph.

For even more dykes to watch out for, pull yourself away from the computer and turn on Dyke TV, television to "incite, subvert, provoke, and organize". This biweekly show can be found on public-access channels across the country including Channel 21 here in St. Louis (call 314-361-8870 for times). Find out more about the history of the show and where it's playing near you at http://www.dyketv.org/. Order previous shows and cool caps, t-shirts, tank tops, and cups. They also need volunteers, so find out how you can create your own segment of the show.

For "all girls... all the DAM time" check out Dyke Action Magazine: The Girlie Network at http://mosaic.echonyc.com/~dam/. This site seems to be a New York lesbian public-access TV info site, but it's hard to tell for sure. While the graphics are great, most of the links didn't work when I stopped by. But the groovy logo makes it worth the visit!

gremouse.gifThe London-based cyber-magazine D.Y.K.E. is full of stuff for lesbians from all over at http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/square/ad454/. The CruiseMe Now! Cafe has info about lesbian places to go in your neck of the world. The Ladies' Room is a message board/classified ad/graffiti area. Read queer writings and submit your own, or for immediate gratification visit the D.Y.K.E. chat room provided by http://www.gay.com. Browse their diverse links collections for more hotspots, and then send D.Y.K.E. a postcard saying how much you like their site. Or not.

There are some groups like the Lesbian Avengers that you really don't want to have mad at you. Another is the Dyke Police. Although their website at http://www.con.wesleyan.edu/%7edp/dp.html is mysteriously vague, the Dyke Police seem to be a rogue theatre troupe concerned with accurate portrayals of lesbians on stage and to be listed in as many programs as possible. And don't try to button their vest! Never anger any group whose symbol is the labyrs (a double-edged axe). Ouch!

Some other websites need mentioning. Dyke Street: A Soap at http://www.demon.co.uk/world/ukgay/ukg000f.html so far just has two episodes and needs a little encouragement to write the next. The editors of Prairie Dyke are being sued for the custody of their child, so their site focuses on gay and lesbian custody resources at http://www.binnet.com/prairiedyke/pd.html (hopefully updated soon). And then there's the adventures of the Kung-Fu Dyke at http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~yvicious/kfd/index.html. Well, maybe that last one isn't such a hot idea, but the rest of these are full of Dyke Power, Dyke Pride, and Dyke HTML. Rock on, sisters!
