For Queer Mice
Quick & Dirty Academy Award CyberGuide
f you just can't wait for the Academy Awards at 8:00pm on Monday March 23rd (Central Standard Time), here's a Quick & Dirty Oscar CyberGuide for you. If you're one of those rare queens (like me) who for some reason don't give a flip about the Oscars, flip on over to the classifieds or something or try www.gayzoo.com. But I digress. For the latest news and gossip about the Oscars, head over to www.oscar.com, the Official 70th Annual Academy Awards site. See all the nominees from Best Actor to Best Sound Effects Editing. Find out who the latest presenters are or listen in to the Nominee Luncheon (yippee!). Trivia buffs will love to search the Awards database and timeline, browse the Best Picture Posters Gallery, and tackle the Trivia Challenge. Preview the Oscar fashions before Joan Rivers can rip them to shreds. Then play the Predict the Winners Contest, and drag queens will love Style Stumpers! This site should satisfy you Academy Queens. But wait! There's more!
Let's face it. They can have their March Madness, but the Academy Awards are OURS! The Datalounge lets you rate the Best Picture nominees (with olives instead of stars) at the fabulous www.datalounge.com. Read other visitors' glowing to grating reviews or leave your own. My favorite is the 18th Annual Golden Rasberry (Razzie) Awards, where "Batman & Robin" leads the nominations closely followed by "Speed 2: Cruise Control" and "Anaconda." The Datalounge is what the Oscars are all about: campy yet glamorous, regal yet dishy, pompous yet fabulous. I love it!
Now here's a quick & dirty rundown on the official Best Picture websites:
- "Titanic" at www.titanicmovie.com. This movie is so big they've mirrored this website in 8 different countries. From there select the "before" or "after" (sinking, that is) section for lots and lots of Titanic goodies, like the desktop pictures and screensavers (do they make your computer crash, too?). With 14 nominations you expect a kick-ass website. Go take the dive and explore the Titanic.
- "L.A. Confidential" at www.newregency.com/laconfidential/. If you have Shockwave Flash, a really fast modem, and nothing better to do, watch their interactive preview. It's a dark website for a dark movie, where drug-use and murder are commonplace and Kim Basinger reappears from the "where are they now?" file. Is it a website or a trashy tabloid? You decide.
- "As Good As It Gets" at www.spe.sony.com/movies/asgoodasitgets/. Brace yourself for Melvin! The Shockwave menu area is really cute with little Verdell walking around if you can stand to wait for it to download (hell, if you sat for three hours through "Titanic" you can sit through this). There's lots to do here, including film clips, matchmaker game, sweepstakes, store, behind the scenes, and more. The Verdell screensaver wins my award for Best Supporting Computer Accessory.
- "The Full Monty" at www.foxsearchlight.com/fullmonty/. "The year's most revealing comedy" wins my award for Most Annoying Animated GIFs. Luckily this British site even has a dictionary for some of the English slang like "chuffers" and "kits." Like us "woofters" and "benders" really need translations for "widger," "bollucks," and "tackle." Men taking off their "kegs" and showing their "lunchboxes?" I'll be in the front row!
- "Good Will Hunting" at www.miramax.com:8888/mm_front/owa/mp.entryPoint?action=1&midStr=497. No shit! Hands-down winner of my Most Annoying URL That Ever Was Award. An easier way is to go to www.miramax.com and click from there. Besides background info on the movie, there're some stills and video clips and that's about it. Pretty skimpy. You'll have more fun playing around the rest of the Miramax site.
Finally, heres a quick & dirty guide to some more Oscar websites:
- Mr. Showbiz Goes to the Oscars at mrshowbiz.com/features/oscars/.
- E! Onlines Oscar Watch 98 at eonline.com/Hot/Awards/Oscarwatch/index.html.
- Oscar Wild at www.reel.com/holidays/academy.html.
- And finally my favorite, SCREW THE ACADEMY! at www.angelfire.com/or/mcoleman/academy.html.
I couldnt have said it better myself!
