Memoirs about Arthur Dove and Colleagues by Suzanne M. Smith written January 1989. This is illustrated but is not yet completed. We will announce prices of this product as soon as it has been completed.

Suzanne M. Smith wrote the first definitive work on the artist Arthur Dove. Much of her Master's thesis was lifted and used in professionally published works on the artist by other art historians. Three months before she passed on April 15, 1989, Suzanne Smith wrote her memories and experiences with Arthur Dove, Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O'Keefe, Charles Seymour, Duncan Phillips, and others. These memoirs also further explain Dove's theory on color which Mrs. Smith claimed was misunderstood, even by those who lifted materials from her master's thesis. Arthur Dove believed Mrs. Smith understood.

The famous master's thesis by Suzanne Mullett (later Smith) called Arthur G. Dove (1880-1946) A Study in Contemporary Art. This is illustrated.

Suzanne Mullett Smith earned her Master's degree from The American University in 1944. Duncan Phillips was Chairman of her master's thesis committee. While doing the thesis, Dove called Sue Smith his Boswell [biographer]. This study was part of her degree requirements. The other part was to produce an index and catalogue of all of the works of Arthur Dove to that period. The index and catalogue are now at the American Art Archives which is part of the Smithsonian Institution. The American Art Archives has a directory of its collection on the World Wide Web which can be searched with Telenet.

This painting is called "Brothers" by Arthur Dove in private collection. There are three paintings by Dove at Smithsoinian's Museum of American Art, now on tour while the Museum of American Art is closed for renovation. There are many paintings by Arthur Dove at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, several at the Whitney Museum, one in Chicago Art Institute, one in San Francisco and many other galleries around the world.

A lecture on Arthur Dove given in 1950 by Suzanne Mullett Smith and Gordon Hunt Smith called "Music of the Eye" and revised in 1976. This is not quite completed in full version. Please come back to this page from time to time and we will post prices.

This lecture was on the relationship between Dove's lines and contemporary music.
