Populare diminutives are Mike, Mickey, and Mikey." -- Websters Encyclopedic Dictionary My name is Michael. I extreemly dislike the diminutive forms of my name. I introduce myself as Michael, and correct people who refer to me in any other way. I was born one fateful Sunday in Kamloops, B.C. February 1, 1976 to be exact. I like to think it was raining that day, but I really don't know. I have never, to the best of my knowledge, spoken to my birth mother. I am adopted. I graduated from Oak Bay Senior Secondary School in 1994 with Honours, where I recieved a Service award. In Concert Band, I played clarinet, bass clarinet, and string bass, and bass guitar and string bass in the Junior and Senior Jazz bands. I sang in the schools Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and Senior Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and accompanied the Junior Vocal Jazz Ensemble on the bass guitar. I have slogged my way through the fast food industry, working for A & W and Food Services in the Student Union Building at UVic. I think everyone should be forced to endure a fast food job at least once in their lives. It has taught me humility and given me the ability to deal with difficult people. At the very least, it has shown me how wonderful working in the real world can be, outside of fast food. Currently, I work in a used book store called SUBtext. I really enjoy working there, mostly because of the fabulous co-workers. We have a lot of fun working and partying together. I have gained experience in database management, independant work, inventory, people skills, and handling large amounts of cash. From January 1999 to April of the same year, I was Chief Electoral Officer with the University of Victoria Students' Society. Our team ran the student elections in three seperate areas of the university, each of which had it's own electoral policies and procedures, the University Senate and Board of Governors, the Students' Society Board of Directors, and the Graduate Students Society simultaneously. Due to a rather contentious referendum question, voter turnout was at a record high, 32% of students voted, compared to only 7% in the previous year. I was responsible for all correspondences, creation and maintenance or the Elections Web Site, hiring and supervision of the eighty poll sitters during the four days of polling and thirty ballot counters, scheduling and timesheets, accounting for and administering a $20,000 budget, advertising, and overseeing production of an eight page election suppliment in the Martlet, the Students' Societies newspaper. Our team dealt effectively with such adversities as a Transit strike and running out of ballots on the first day of polling. I have been a part time student at the University of Victoria since 1995. I major in Mathematics and Computer Science. I tutor my fellow students in both Math and Computer Science. In 1996, I joined the University of Victoria Chamber Singers. With the Chambersingers, I have been lucky enough to travelled the world on choir trips, including South Africa, Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, and the Peoples republic of China. In 1997 I became involved in student politics at UVic. From March to November of 1998, I was the Acting Chair of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Alliance. Currently, I sit on the Univesity of Victoria Students' Society Board of Directors as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Alliance Representative. I am the Clubs Council Assistant with the UVSS, and sit on the SUB and Services committee. I am proficient with Windows95/98, Microsoft Word, Excel, Front Page, Power Point, Macintosh System 7, MacOS 8.0 & 8.5, Claris Works, Claris Home Page, and Metrowerks Codewarrior. I can speak C, C++, Java, Pascal, Basic and Fortran.
