Otterzero's GURPS Character!

Jean Heathfield

History and Background

Jean Heathfield was born to a merchant father and seamstress mother. The youngest of three children, he has a brother seven years older than himself and a sister four years older. At the start of this adventure, he is 26 years of age.

Jean's family was relatively wealthy, mainly due to the shrewd business sense of his father. The family maintained a dry goods store, although they made most of their money by importing goods between the three dominant countries of the land -- fabrics, crafts, etc. Despite many offers to the contrary, his father remained an honest businessman, and was well-regarded by his peers.

Most of Jean's father's attention was centered on the two older children. His older brother, Thom, inherited his father's fairness and shrewdness, and he was the obvious choice to inherit the family business. His sister Lydia, who had always been a bit flightly, became the pride and joy of the family when her magical abilities were discovered at the age of 12. The family began to devote much of their resources to her training. They sent her to [magic schools?] for long periods of time, which was devastating for the young Jean -- Lydia was his closest childhood friend. In her absence, he became much more introspective and shy, often shirking his assigned duties at his parents' shop. He would often spend time in the wilder parts of the country, climbing rocks and trees to escape his sense of isolation.

Jean was hardly neglected -- his parents promised him that they would have him tested for magical potential in his late teens, and assured him a job working in the family business. But as time went on, he became more and more resentful of the preferential way his older siblings were treated. A deep-seated jealousy grew in his heart towards those he feels have been treated better than himself, a jealousy which remains to this day. As his teenage years continued, he became more and more distanced from his parents and siblings. He also began to display a fierce intelligence, more cunning than shrewd, and grew into a lanky, but agile, young man.

By the time he was 18, he had gone into business on his own as a small-time trader. He had learned enough from his father to do fairly well and support himself. But unlike his father, he quickly began to realize the opportunities that existed for those willing to be a bit less than honest... While he remained somewhat honest, and refused to deal in particularly hazardous substances, or magic items, he learned a few things about knife-fights and criminals -- enough to know that, as exciting as this world was, he much preferred to stay on its fringes. [Hence the fact that has not maintained any criminal connections.]

Over time he became involved in shady import/export deals across the mountainous border to Tyros, eventually transporting goods back and forth across the border himself. He discovered that he had a knack for travelling across mountainous terrain, and became more and more skilled at evading the guards in the area. The few times that he was caught or questioned about his travels he happened to be doing legitimate business, although he did begin to worry for his own safety.

At the age of 20 he took time off from his work to visit his sister, now married and living in the [southern?] part of the country. Although he was once resentful of her, they quickly warmed to each other, and he even got along with her grumpy husband, also a mage of some skill. She told Jean that she believed he had some magical potential himself, although he would certainly need testing and training. This confirmed the odd feeling that Jean would sometimes pick up when seeing or touching a magical item.

Jean quickly sought out magical examination and education at his own expense, and by the time he was 24, he had amassed some degree of arcane skill. He was not the most focused of students, although he felt a certain affinity with Earth and Air magic. His spells were very useful for his smuggling runs across the border to Tyros, which he resumed with new fervor.

At the start of this adventure, Jean, now 26, has become disillusioned with his career as a smuggler. Having recently given up the job and broken off most of his old connections, he finds himself with a lot less money than he has been used to. He has even taken on some very legitimate, and very boring, work for his brother. However, he longs for some new task or career that might lead to further adventure... and a chance to improve the skills that he believes he was never yet been given the chance to develop.

Physically, Jean is a thin, wiry fellow, standing 6'2" and weighing 130lbs. He has short, dusty blond hair, tanned skin, and a thick, well-trimmed moustache. His eyes are muddy brown in color and usually half-closed, a habit from working outside and shielding them from sunlight. His hands are unusually rough due to his climbing experience, and he usually keeps them covered or out of sight. He prefers light brown or tan clothing, made of leather or cotton.
