There is nothing quite like Salo. The viewing experince in any version is sickening and blistering. Yet, the VHS version is extremely grainy and as I recall much shorter. I know the Criterion is uncut and uncensored, becuase if you watch the VHS version, you really don't understand why it is the most disturbing movie of all time. The Criterion shows it all, in the raw Pasolini style. I warn you that the images in this film will haunt you. In terms of video quality, the Criterion is good, but all copies of Pasolini's movies tend to be grainy and "dirty" (Maybe they were made like that). The OOP non-criterion Pasolini discs are attrocious, expecially Arabian Nights. (I have seen dubbed tapes better) So I think the Criterion is a good as it gets. I think the subtitles should have been redone, since the words frequently get lost in the shot. Even with the Criterion's rawness, the film is much more powerful if you have read the M. Sade's book, especially the last part. Pasolini's film cannot replicate the methodic, tedious nature of the book, but it comes closer to any other film in relentlessly sickening the viewer. -Chefash Zenero4968 wrote in message <1998082001400300.VAA28900@ladder03.news.aol.com>... >can someone tell me if the Criterion edition of Salo is uncut. is it longer >than the version distributed by Water Bearer? and how is the transfer on the >Criterion disc? thanks. > >Michael
