Hhm, I suppose it it good in a sadistic way. It's very
well photographed and acted, but also awfully long
and talky.
The overwhelming sense you get out of this movie
is that, for DeSade and perhaps Pasolini at least,
life is cruel and heartless, and our ends are of
no more significance than the bugs we squash
beneath our feet. The victims in the movie
are spiritually and emotionally crushed before
physically destroyed, and it is all done with a
complete lack of directorial editorializing.
It is not nearly as gory or graphic as its
reputation would have you believe, but
it is FAR more depressing and disturbing
than any other gory horror movie I have
ever seen. It's the kind of movie that makes
you wonder what's the point of even living.
Is it worth seeing? I saw it because I'd
heard so much about it and was curious,
so, I guess on that basis alone, if it applies
to you, I'd say go for it. But get some prozac
ready.
    Warning: Salo contains EXPLICIT scenes
of both teenage male and female sexual acts,
including rape. And unlike American films,
upon seeing them you will be pretty sure that these actors
aren't twenty-something adults just pretending
to be teens. That makes it all the more disturbing
and, in my opinion, indecent. No wonder this movie
was banned for so many years in almost every
country on earth! Would you allow your 15 year old
son or daughter to make a movie where a large
portion of the screen time him/her was going to
be naked and constantly getting raped on camera?
Italian parents must be awfully liberal.
