Restigouche, a river which flows through New Brunswick, is a word derived from the MicMac language, meaning "a river full of tributaries." The fish spear with five prongs is an allusion to these as well as being a contextual weapon of the hunt with the aboriginal associations and a graphic reminder of the function of this ship in anti-submarine warfare. The gold background is taken from the arms of New Brunswick.
As for the Ships, the Restigouche I was a River class destroyer. Originally HMS Cornet, she was commissioned into RCN in June 1938, and wore the pennant H00 until she was paid off in October 1945.
The Restigouche II is the lead ship in the Restigouche class of destroyer escorts. She was commissioned in June 1958. After undergoing the conversion to an improved restigouche class destroyer escort in 1970-72, she was recommissioned into the fleet and currently wears pennant 257.
