Yesterday was at first pretty quiet, I went to the lab, it rained a little, I cycled to the Mall and then came home. Avi had managed to get tickets to "The Lion King" the stage production which was showing at the Broward Performing Arts center. I had never seen the movie, and I hadn't been to a play since "The Complete Millennium Musical" with Peta some time ago.
Avi arrived at my place at about 5:30 pm and was dressed very nicely. I was wearing jeans and was wondering if I should change to something nicer but he said I should be able to get in as I was. We drove up to Anthony and Jill's place as they were coming with us. On the drive up the rain started to fall and got heavier and heavier with thunder and lightning crackling off in the distance. We arrived without incident and went inside, Anthony was also dressed very nicely, and Jill was wearing a little black dress with a purple dinner jacket. It was at the point where my heart fell down towards my stomach as I knew I was horribly underdressed for the first time in a year where I might have been able to look nice. Jill offered me some of her clothes, but as I am almost a full foot taller than her it was a kind gesture but fruitless. From the car drive to the restaurant I was on the verge of tears and when I sat down at the table by myself I just let go. I waved to let the others know where our table was and made my way to the bathroom to have some privacy.
The whole week had been really stressful, with late nights and the ongoing stress about accepting the Montana position with all that entailed. The eternal rain matched my world-weariness and sorrow, my underdressed status was merely the straw that broke the camels back.
Jill came in and asked if I was ok, patently I was not but it was a kind gesture. I looked a real mess, my hair was messed and wet from the rain, my eyes red and tear-worn. We talked for a while as I composed myself somewhat and then we went back to the table.
The conversation was fairly quiet, I didn't have a lot to say, and the guys were watching football on the big screen. I managed to finally order and the night picked up a little. We talked and ate but we had to hurry as the play started at 8 pm. When we finally arrived, Jill and Avi went to get tickets while Anthony and I looked for a parking spot. We met up just as the doors were about to close and we went looking for our seats. Alas nothing was simple there either, two seats were on the opposite side of the theatre (though the same rows) to the other two. Finally however the production got under way.
It really was quite a spectacle, the amount of amazing and ingenious costuming really was stunning. Alas, the seats we had were right on the far edge and at times it was hard to see parts of the stage. During the intermission we went over to talk with Jill and Anthony before making a quick dash to the bathroom. It wrapped up as expected, the return of the king to take his throne from the usurper. The play finished about 11 pm, although by the time we made it to the car in the rain and home via the pharmacy it was closing in on midnight. Avi and I drove home and I crashed out exhausted both physically and mentally.
Today has been very quiet. I slept in and it rained for much of this morning. By the time I made it to the lab it was midday and I wasn't motivated to do any work once I got there. I came home and slept some more and then went for a walk with my cameras around Sunset Mall, and spent time in the big bookshop read "Maus".
