7:30 pm – Tuesday 22nd August

Secretaries suck.

Well, it has been a week since I last wrote, and happily I only had to sleep one night in my office. I lucked out on Wednesday morning, and had my stuff moved in by that afternoon. The week was still rather hectic even after that point, but the humidity cleared up a lot, and things started to move in the bureaucracy. I was officially employed, I had my phone and Internet connected, and so by Friday I was functioning close to normal. I still need to do more work on my classes, but I am also working on a small grant proposal that I think is pretty nifty.

The weekend was nice, and I did a lot of cycling and looking in shop windows. I was also able to sleep in somewhat, but the change to no daylight savings has confused my body clock a great deal. I rented some anime from a local video store, but in trying to get my computer set back up, I managed to (probably) fry the motherboard. I used my laptop to watch them instead, and they provided a nice relaxant.

On Sunday I went to check out the Unitarians service, which occurs just around the corner from my new apartment. There were a lot of dykes so that was cool, but no one really welcomed me, so I felt very much an outsider. I was sufficiently bummed out afterwards that I needed some retail therapy, and so I went and bought a pair of cyclic shoes. I returned the DVD's, and checked out some of the local bookstores.

In the evening, I met up with Alex. Alex is a lesbian from Boston who has moved here to pursue a master's degree, and whom I connected with through a post I made on Craigslist. She is taller than average, has really short blonde hair and is very androgynous. Suffice to say therefore that I thought that she was incredibly hot. We had a few beers and played a little pool before walking around downtown and then getting a few more beers. We talked about all sorts of stuff, and then conversation was very easy and unforced. Her girlfriend will be visiting town this weekend, but after that neither of us know what is going to happen with our respective relationships. We hugged when we parted, and so who knows what things may come?

On Monday morning I had a meeting with the health and safety officer about my laboratory experiments. In the afternoon I had a training session for the online course content system that they have here. I don't think I will necessarily use it, but at least I know how.

Today was the big faculty orientation, and so I woke up especially early for that. It was a necessary event, but still rather tedious. I had an enjoyable time afterwards at the mixer, and was one of the last few people to leave. I went out for a bicycle ride, but by that point it was getting dark.

Kadie just got back to Montana this evening. She worked through until last Thursday in California, and then drove to Portland Oregon. She spent time there visiting her aunt and brother, as well as other friends that she has there.
