3:30 pm - Thursday 1st February 2007

I'm sitting in a guest lecture, and since I cannot reach an open wi-fi net, I'm doing my diary instead.

It has been a hectic few days. Today I had a grant proposal due at 10 am. I obtained the signatures I needed, and made the deadline with 15 minutes to spare. I would have submitted it sooner, but my Wednesday lab needed a lot of attention. The lab ran from 2 pm until 6 pm, almost an hour overtime. I worked on part of the proposal and then headed home. Amusingly I saw a black Ferrari being buried in a pile of snow by a group of students.

I had to cancel class for Thursday, something I am not happy to do but which was necessary. Hopefully next week I will be able to get back on track, I'm teaching chemistry that I find interesting, but that might not grip the students.

I invited Shelly to watch the “snow moon” rise over town tomorrow night. Kadie is going with Andrea to do the same thing, and I wanted to at least have someone to hang out with. Alex is out of town on her way to Las Vegas to spend a long weekend with her girlfriend Sherry. What is funny is that the department people think that she is my girlfriend. That is certainly not an idea I want to dissuade, because Alex is very attractive and smart.

This evening there is a social event for the faculty candidate. Its out in the less urbanized part of Arizona, and now that I have the proposal submitted I can relax.

I am still thinking of buying a motorcycle, and a Kawasaki Ninja 500R looks very tempting. There is a motorsports dealer on the far side of town, and if I can ever get out there, I can at least have a test ride.

5 pm - I'm sitting in a fight between faculty members about whether to offer a woman a faculty position. There are good points on both sides, but we're still up against a rock.
