It's been a busy weekend, and there's still today to go. I didn't do very much on Saturday except sleep. I dropped by the lab to work up a reaction, and later (about 5 pm) I cycled into town. Being the Canberra Day weekend, they were having the mini-street parade. It wasn't overly amazing, but it was interesting to see so many people in Civic. I ordered Sushi and waited ages, I went back up to the counter and they had forgotten. For some reason this touched off a raw nerve and I had the tight feeling in my chest and unpleasant stomach which means I am really upset. I don't know why this triggered it, so it was strange and not pleasant. I reordered and ate with the unpleasant sensation still hanging over me.
I spent part of the evening in and rang my parents, Mum seems quite surprised by me phoning, but I couldn't tell whether it was because I was calling on a Saturday or because of my apparently sudden interest in sewing. I would say that I have caught a minor sewing bug, but for what I think is a fair reason. Basically I can never find anything nice in my size (~16) and if I do it is either 1) the wrong colour or 2) hideously expensive. Hence I can try to make basic stuff like long skirts or simple dresses where not only did I pick the material and colour, but which I helped to make. I had an interesting discussion with a girl at Aveline's party about the feeling of accomplishment which comes with making "real" stuff instead of sitting at a computer all day and making "virtual" things.
I know this sewing is a real learning curve, and so far I've stuffed up twice, but only one of those is a problem, the neck hole is slightly too large, but that can be fixed. So anyway, I chatted to Mum and she recommended against doing a pre-wash on the pannae velvet material, so on Saturday night I was taking measurements and tracing away and putting pins in and so forth. The SCA meeting today is for construction of helmets followed by a costuming workshop. I'll take both dresses down, the red one to be finished and the silver pannae one for Jenni to have a look at and critique.
The big Australian SCA festival which everyone is gearing up for is the Rowany festival to be held this year up near Sydney. At the moment I don't know whether I'll have the money to be able to go (or buy food and camping equipment for 4-7 days). It would be nice, so I haven't said yes or no either way just yet.
It's raining at the moment, therefore I'm happy. :) Oh, I also watched "Gold-Finger" last night at the movies, cheezy with a captal CHEEZE. ;)
Anyway, so yesterday was the first day of the SCA armoring day and we didn't actually do all that much. Adam was hammering out helmet pieces and there wasn't much that we newbies could do except fighter practice. That ran from about 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and was a nice day to meet the other college members. On a side note, the queer group or "college" in SCA is know as the "Purple Feather" which is their symbol. Basically we have a very strong purple feather contingent, because all the girls (half a dozen) were either bi or lesbian except for one. (Ok, it's not just raining anymore, it's now a storm)
Anyway, it was a good day despite the fact that I'd brought a hat I got sun-burnt on the chest for about the 5th time (will I ever learn?). I called Susan and wandered over to meet her and Jules at Woden Mall and got a lift with them to the BBQ at Burt St. It was nice, though I went home to change and shower. It was a relaxing evening despite the mosquito bites and the rain which ruined the fire. I crashed out about 11 pm and woke up at the scary hour of 8 am this morning.
Ok, I need to get my umbrella, find food, see if the fabric store is open and then make my way down to Lyons again. Time to run… :)
