My home PC had a melt-down, or as I mentioned to an online friend, it didn't melt down as such, rather it exploded, then imploded, then made ominous noises before opening a portal to an alternate dimension. After I beat back the tentacled monstrosities who were attempting to colonize out Universe, the computer got all petulant and refused to boot. To put it simply, I'm typing this at work.

I was thinking about something this morning, the true abundance of deviancy. I mean deviancy as anything unconventional from a mainstream point of view, I am not judging anyone here, I'm just using the word.
Basically I came to the conclusions "that deviancy concentrates". Say you have 3 possible deviancies in a population with an occurrence of 1% each. The probability of having all three deviancies you might think is (0.01 x 0.01 x 0.01) = 1 in 1 million. However, having one deviancy makes you more likely to have others, so the number of people with multiple deviancies is much lower. (Still with me here?) OK, I'll use myself as an example. If I wasn't TS, the likelihood of me exploring my sexuality would be much lower than it is. Because I explored my sexual preference, I might find people in this other sub-cultures who may be into other sub-cultures such as "Goth", illicit drugs, vegan life-style and role-playing to give a few examples. On the other hand, people who are "main-stream" are much less likely to explore alternate "cultures" and so therefore tend to stay within a narrowly defined set of norms. Returning to me, my issues of gender led me to explore my sexual preference, after which I branched into other areas of sexuality such as B&D and S&M. At about the same time, I was able to explore altered states of consciousness *cough*, and through this take a greater interest in philosophy and other areas of abstract human thought. Recently I've begun to exploring my gothic leanings and also the SCA (which might be considered a type of "deep-immersion" role-playing).

Ok, so what does this all mean? Well, I guess it means that the number of "deviants" in a population is lower than would otherwise be expected since the deviancies are not spread evenly through out the population, but tend to be concentrated. I guess this leaves me feeling somewhat isolated since most of my friends fall into the "main-stream" category. I guess it's important to remember that this is just a "probability" thing, that the next TS, could be as normal as any "main-stream" person and vice-versa.

I don't really know where I was going with this idea, I guess I just needed to get it out of my head and onto paper.
