"To Whom it May Concern;-

"This letter will introduce Master Charles Harty, a most faithful lad of ten years. For over a year and a half Charles has worked for me, in the capacity of sweeping the side walk, shoveling snow, and in fact any job offered him. He has been faithful and painstaking, never fearing weather and the kind of work.

"He is worthy in every way and I can recommend him, and only hope he may continue as faithful throughout his life as when helping me.

"Very truly,

"E. B. Bradley"

From an undated letter in the scrapbook of Charles Harty:

"To Mr. and Mrs. Harty,

"It is with much regret that I lose Charles from my room. During his time spent with me he caused me very little trouble. It was a pleasure to work with him because he was an excellent worker and a very bright student. His behavior was very satisfactory. I hope he has grand success in the school is his [sic] about to enter.

"I wish your family the best of success and am sorry I did not get to visit you before you left. If you ever come back to Gretna, I hope I'll get to see you."

"Best wishes and good luck.

"Sincerely,

"Margaret McKeon"
