The Opening Party started right on time with bears and cubs queing right out the front door. The party began with some general mixing, with the competitors introducing themselves and selling raffle tickets. At this point, the judges of the contest where unkown to all but the committee members of N.A.G! and VicBears, so the contestants had to be extra nice to everybody. As the night wore on, the party goers where entertained by Dulcie DeJour, and our very own Hairy Spice.

Australian Bear and Cub Contest Heats
Saturday 27 June from
1:00pm, Laird Hotel.
The heats were a nice quiet affair with the bears and cubs being judged on a variety of criteria both as a group, and by individual interview. The whole proceedings where nicely backdropped by MancerBear's Woof! gay erotic art exhibiton.

Australia Bear and Cub Final Contest.
Saturday 27 June from
9:00pm, Laird Hotel.
The main event! The Laird was crowded to over-flowing, 550+ of hairy, sweaty, beefy bears who very generously paid a gold coin donation which was given to the Alfred Hospital Ward 7 Fund and the Bear and Cub Travel Fund. After much diliberation the winners of the contest were selected, and let me tell you, it was no easy selection. Congratulations to Paul Bear (yes, it is his real name) and PJ Sandlant. Last years winners, Bear Randal Robinson and Cub Don Marshall were onhand to pass down the titles.

Beef 'n' Beer at the Bend

1:00pm, Yarra Bend Park.
A cold day, but thank goodness there was all that fur (not to mention the black plastic) to keep us warm! The spit roast BBQ was delicious, the company was warm and woofy, the beer was, well it was beer. The day was topped off by BazzBear's now to be world famous Bears Beat Walk into the bushes of Yarra Bend Park. A lovely spot by the beautiful Yarra River.
The Final Bear Bust
Sunday 28 June from
6:00pm, Glasshouse Hotel.
Talk about knowing how a sardine feels in a can. Imagine all these bears and cubs (not to mention the women, as this was a mixed event to raise money for charity) crammed into three small rooms of your local hotel. If you were there, you wouldn't need to imagine it. I don't need to tell you that it was a great finale to the Southern Hibearnation weekend. There were a lot of prizes and givaways throughout the entire weekend which were graciously given to us by the gay and lesbian communitee.
That was it. A great time. Remember, you need to be there to truely appreciate how much fun it can be, so I'll look forward to seeing everybody who was there this year back again next year, as well as lots of new faces.
