Start-Up Coordinator

Responsible for site location; program planning; volunteers; fundraising and grantwriting for a new Homeless Support Centre opening in Oshawa in January 2000.

Responsible for fundraising and grantwriting; volunteer recruitment and management; coordination of special events (ie Annual Dinner); develop web site; write quarterly newsletter; and work on educational and community economic development programs.

Community Service Worker

Responsible for intake/registration; discharge planning: and client supervision with homeless men in a shelter setting. Provide support and counseling on issues such as relationships; sexuality/sexual orientation; drug and alcohol addiction; rehabilitation; employment (including resume preparation); and access to housing and shelter. Make referrals to community agencies and advocate for clients when necessary. After hours supervision of other residents including monitoring federal parolees in a halfway house located in same building.

Race Relations Coordinator

Responsible for implementing "The Critical Path: A Race Relations Strategy for Ajax-Pickering". This program involves outreach and promotion, a two day race relations summit, community needs assessment, implementation of race relations strategies,and education.
Also, supervised a Youth Service Canada project that developed anti-racist activities in the community.


Anti Racism Project Coordinator (part-time May 1994 - October 1996)

Responsible for program planning, and day-to-day administration of an outreach and education project on racism. Supervised program volunteers; made educational presentations; wrote funding proposals and liaised with schools, media, human service agencies, business, government and community groups about the program. Developed tool-kits, training manuals and a video with companion workbook. Organized many conferences and workshops. Conducted a survey of community leaders about racism programs.

ISAP Counsellor (Immigrant Settlement and Adaptation Program)

I filled in for various staff in this program during vacations, leave of absences etc. My work included resume preparation, teaching job skills workshops, and immigration and personal needs counselling.

Youth Action 2000 Coordinator

Responsible for coordinating a youth employment project with disadvantaged youth. Youth did community development work in low income neighbourhoods. Taught life skills and employability related workshops. Provided counselling for personal problems.

Resource Worker

Facilitated the development of strategic and action plans for the network. Implemented the plans including development of a media profile; collecting and analyzing existing data; administered a survey on social issues and needs within the community; organized a community forum; wrote newsletters; and maintained contact with elected officials. Acted as an administrative resource to the Network as well, including minute taking and distribution; correspondence and meeting preparation.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

1988-Present Student Christian Movement of Canada (Member then Senior Friend)
Ecumenical Social Justice Organization. Works in solidarity with oppressed people through education and financial support. Held various staff and volunteer positions. Member of the $500,000 Endowment Fund Committee. Canadian designate to Cuba SCM Conference (1992), and to USA Ecumenical Student Gathering (Kentucky, 1990)

1994-1997 Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Youth of Durham; Founder and Facilitator
Co-facilitated and organized meetings for group of lesbian, gay and bisexual teenagers and young adults. Provided one-on-one phone and in-person counseling both on-going and crisis/emergency. Assisted with fundraising and funding proposals; outreach material development; training and education within the community and supervision of volunteers and placement students.

1992-1994 AIDS Committee (Durham); Volunteer and Board Member
As a volunteer was involved in many aspects including training and managing volunteers; making educational presentations; in-person and phone counseling; fundraising and general office work. As a Board Member I was part of a 5 person collective that acted as Executive Director for an extended period of time and was in the office full-time for several months.

1992-1994 Community-Police Employment Equity Committee
Durham Regional Police Services Committee established to develop and monitor employment equity and harassment policies and guidelines. Designated School Board representative.

1991-1994 Whitby Kinette Club; Bulletin Editor and Public Relations
Community Service Club committed to fundraising and service work for various agencies in the area, especially those serving children, seniors and people with Cystic Fibrosis. Edited a monthly newsletter for Club members.



EDUCATION

BA in SOCIOLOGY (with an emphasis in Women’s Studies). Glendon College Faculty, York University.
Degree completed bilingually (English and French). Included courses in statistics, political theory, research methods, and comparative analysis.



LANGUAGES SPOKEN

Excellent written and spoken English, and proficient in written and spoken French. Have also studied Spanish, German and Ojibwa.



COMPUTER SKILLS

I am proficient in a variety of Computer programs and systems (Word7, WordPerfect, Office97). I also have Internet and E-mail experience. I have created and maintain several web pages on the net.
