These pictures were taken in December 1999, in my hotel room in Dallas, Texas, while preparing to leave for the airport to return home.
It was time to "get out of town"... I was packed and on the way to the airport. I used to live less than 10 miles from the DFW airport, but had very seldom been to the car rental return area, so I went literally in circles for a while. The bus from the car rental return area to the terminal was pretty full, but I was one of only a couple passengers for my stop.
I checked my larger bag with the curbside SkyCap, a nice gentleman with an accent I couldn't place at all. He was from Zaire [new name -- Democratic Republic of Congo] (the first person I know my alter ego or I have met from Zaire). He needed to see my ticket and photo ID -- so I showed him my alter ego's Pennsylvania drivers license -- at least the name, the eyes and the voice matched!
At the security check point, I dropped my purse, computer, and camera bag (no film in it this time) on the conveyor and walked right through the metal detector. As usual, no underwires (nor waist nipper stays) were detected. I gathered my stuff and off to the gate.
My flight schedule had me flying from Dallas to Pittsburgh (about 2-1/2 hours), a two-plus hour layover in Pittsburgh, and then on to home.
Enroute from Dallas to Pittsburgh, I had a great-granny as my seat companion. As I'm a five-time granny myself, we had a nice conversation about our respective families, the weather, and all those other things people discuss with complete strangers they'll never meet again. As we landed, I asked her what she thought of my "shirt", and she said she'd noticed it and thought it might be a bit out of season, but a nice "Hawaiian" style.
The Pittsburgh airport contains "The Air Mall", a large collection of shops, with prices guaranteed by the airport to be no higher than other malls. [That doesn't mean the shops are inexpensive, though!]
While there, I cruised through the book stores and the London Fog shop (going out of business sale, buy a nice set of rainproof foul-weather clothes), Victoria's Secret, several perfume and makeup shops, including Clinique and Perfumania. I only bought a few things -- a "Millenium Candle Ball" at the Body Works and a set of good "foul weather gear" and leather gloves from the London Fog store (having a "going out of business" sale, though, so the prices were "special"). There was a Nine and Company shoe store, and I know from all the shoe shopping I'd done the past two nights that their prices were not out of line.
I chatted with shop folks in most of the stores, however, and none of them called security on me. My alter ego was fascinated by the video playing in Victoria's Secret, which was a video of the making of their current (Christmas and Desire) commercials on the television and ads in print. I had to expend considerable effort to get him to let me leave!
I clearly was not trying to pass as a woman, but the clothes clearly were not those of a man. Thanks, Stephe (from Atlanta) for the encouragement.
Waiting in the gate area for the departure of the flight home, I was joined by a young woman (a student at Penn State) who was waiting for her flight to State College. We had a nice chat about her upcoming trip to London. She happened to comment that she liked my shirt -- so I told her she could likely buy one like it when she got to London -- just look for the "Liberty" shops, which have lots of nice prints like this.
Her flight was called, and shortly so was mine. My seat companion on this leg was a 40-ish woman coming to my area for a few days of business. She had indicated she was apprehensive about the small airplane... so we chatted unceasingly as we taxied, flew, and taxied at our destination. I really could not tell when I first spoke to either of these women whether they were surprised that the voice was male, or not. By this time, it was well past the onset of "6-o'clock" shadow, but clearly there was no positive or negative reaction that I could detect.
The outfit I'm wearing here includes a pretty blouse (the tag says UK 12 US 8) with a deep blue background and thick red, orange, yellow and white blossoms, which I bought from Liberty in London's Heathrow airport earlier this year. The slacks are my Limited side zip flat front stretch pants (size 10) you may see elsewhere (the Orlando pages) on this site.
Pantyhose are Leggs Reliance (D) in Suntan, and shoes from some inexpensive shoe shop in Germany. Foundations (waist nipper) by Maidenform, and (bra (36A) and panties (6) from Fruit of the Loom. Breast forms are the US$30 "enhancers" from the local Eckerd store that you see everywhere. These do a nice job in a 36A bra.
Makeup is only Cover Girl Clean Liquid in Natural Beige, with a natural colored (but pearlescent) lipstick (Le Pearl from a company called Janelle Mignon).
