Bra Shopping Expeditions

New 18 September 2005

As a frequent shopper and holder of my very own "Angels" credit card, I get lovely little tokens of appreciation from one of my favorite store chains, even though they clearly aren't the least expensive places around.

My local "Chez Vicki" is about 20 miles away, and so I'd deferred the trip until I needed some other things as well. I've shopped for bras often enough that I don't begin to get flustered when I am approached by a store associate (read sales person), even if she's got a measuring tape hanging around her neck. This young (relative to my 60+) lady -- about 40 -- asked if she could help -- there were 4 or 5 of them and only a couple customers, so I guess they needed something interesting to do.

"Hi... I got one of these cards in the mail... what choices are there?"

"Oh -- the panty offer is one of these 4 styles in these 4 colors -- what size does she need?"

Hmm... what to do? Fib and be embarassed later or ... that never wins!

"These fit on the hips and not the waist, and I'm about 40 to 41 inches there, so a medium or size 6 usually fits me well. While it's free I'd like to try a thong, especially since one doesn't try on panties. This seems like a good way to try the thong over a longer term."

Now for the bad news, behind a great smile of welcome and thanks for being up front...

She pulled out the "Medium" drawers and, like Mrs. Hubbard, her cupboard was bare. "We've sold a lot of these -- we get a couple shipments each week."

[side note] Always let a lady open her drawers for you!

I must have looked pretty disappointed (which is a lot different from looking pretty, if you could see me). This is true, even though I was wearing only girl clothing -- The VS Catalog's "London Jean" and appropriate chambray top, along with knee-high stockings and (unisex) "jungle shoes" -- my wife and I each have a pair of these and we have to check the sizes at times to be sure we know whose is whose.

Other colors were out of stock too -- there were NONE of these thong panties in my size in their store. I decided to check another VS shop and would check back in a few days.

[another side note interrupting the main stream story]One of the benefits of being retired is that you can always go shopping -- maybe not buying, but shopping!

Well, on Friday, I was off to the next closest VS store, this one much bigger and about 50 miles away. If the "nearby and neighborly" disappointment got to me, what could this do? Probably have me change my mind and look at alternatives!

Same deal... "Hi... can I help you?"

[Yet another aside] These folks really train their staff well -- it's almost always the same kind of positive, let me sell you anything attitude.

"I've got one of the gift cards I'd like to use - what choices do I have?"

Yes! She had the style I wanted and the size I needed, but bright orange and purple aren't my usual colors. This young lady may have been a supervisor of some kind, as she promptly offered several color substitutes. "Would you like to look at bras?"

We looked at a couple styles, and I mentioned that the new "uplift" one looked interesting on the website. What size came up again, and it's always an opportunity. "I usually find 36Bs to be good. I this (pulling the shirt down a little and pointing) is an Angels in that size."

She recalled, after seeing just a tiny flash of the front, that it was a recently discontinued style. "You might like this new one with uplift."

"More shape isn't my usual preference," I baldly lied, "but we could try it," and off to the fitting rooms we went. After a few moments to get the shirt and bra off, and one of the new ones on I heard a doorbell "ding dong," followed by a tap..tap..tap at the door. Later I deduced the doorbell was to announce that someone had entered the fitting room hallway.

"How are you doing? Do the seem to fit well?" she asked.

"The 36A seems to have the 'double boob' problem, I think. Would you care to see what you think?" Now that's about as unthreatening an invitation as I could come up with, standing half naked, wearing a bra, in a lovely pink fitting room in Victoria's Secret. Besides, I really needed her perspective.

"You can open the door -- no one else is back here."

So I did, and she agreed that the Angels Uplift in 36A needed to have a bigger cup. "Let me try the B," and I closed the door to change. A few minutes later we both agreed that I needed more cup than the A in this style, but the B needed more of me! "I'll change back and let's see what else we can find."

After several more attempts, we found this demi (Victoria's Secret Angels Lined Demi in 36B) that fit very nicely. I probably was in the store for nearly an hour, and half that time was in and out of the fitting rooms with incredible advice and cooperation. A couple times other (woman) customers clearly were within earshot without anyone seemingly looking askance at this.

After I'd selected this bra, she turned and picked the matching lace thong panty in my size and color and said she could substitute that panty since they were out of stock in all the other choices. Given that panties aren't "try on" things in our area (there are New York and Pennsylvania laws about this), completing the deal like this cemented the sale for sure!

I love going and shopping, yes, and buying too.

By the way, this thong (Angels low-rise Rio thong with lace trim) fits like, well, panties should fit. The lace back is incredibly soft and smooth, unlike an earlier thong I'd tried years ago and found very irritating and uncomfortable in certain parts of the lower back.

I like this picture OK, but... Since I didn't bother with hair and makeup, I decided to simply amputate the otherwise offending parts.

I love this one!

This is close to my view of this lovely bra

I thought I'd get a good view of the set like this

Although I prefer this picture.

I know I'm not a supermodel (or even a girl), but compare the above pictures and this one from Victoria's Secret's web site. Would the comparison yield the same result if she were 40 years older? [Aside] Really I'm only kidding!

Except for the color and the wings, which mine didn't include, this is exactly what I bought! Does it look as good on her as it does on me? [Aside] Really I'm only kidding!
